Article Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the second most common infection in humans, making it a global health priority. Nearly half of all women will experience a symptomatic UTI, with uropathogenic (UPEC) being the major causative agent of the infection. Although there has been extensive research on UPEC virulence determinants, the importance of host-specific metabolism remains understudied. We report here that UPEC upregulates the expression of ethanolamine utilization genes during uncomplicated UTIs in humans. We further show that UPEC ethanolamine metabolism is required for effective bladder colonization in the mouse model of ascending UTI and is dispensable for bladder colonization in an immunocompromised mouse model of UTI. We demonstrate that although ethanolamine metabolism mutants do not show increased susceptibility to antimicrobial responses of neutrophils, this metabolic pathway is important for surviving the innate immune system during UTI. This study reveals a novel aspect of UPEC metabolism in the host and provides evidence for an underappreciated link between bacterial metabolism and the host immune response.

Background: Acute postoperative hypertension (APH) is encountered in patients following craniotomy and is associated with major complications. This retrospective cohort study evaluates 30-day survival for patients who received labetalol, nicardipine, or both drugs.

Methods: Patients 18 and older who underwent craniotomy between January 1, 2010 and January 1, 2023 were included in the study.

Yes-associated protein (YAP) is a major downstream nuclear coactivator of the Hippo pathway and is activated during myocardial hypertrophy. Verteporfin, a YAP inhibitor, may serve as a potential treatment for myocardial hypertrophy. This study was aimed at exploring the role and underlying mechanisms of verteporfin in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial hypertrophy both in vivo and in vitro.

Dental plaque microbiota following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation and risk of chronic graft-versus-host disease.

Haematologica

September 2025

Clinical Research Division, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle, WA, USA; Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Microbiota disruptions have been associated with short-term complications after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT). However, only a few studies have examined the relationship between dysbiosis and chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), the main long-term immunologic toxicity of alloHCT. Considering the role of oral microbiota in systemic inflammatory diseases, we evaluated whether oral microbiota at day 28 post-HCT corresponding to clinical recovery from the acute events after transplantation is associated with subsequent cGVHD.

Influence of functional groups on drug solubility using choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents.

Department of Chemical Engineering, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), Kalavakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, 603110, India.

Context: The drug solubilization is still a significant challenge in pharmaceutical research. This study examined the sigma-surface, sigma-profile, and sigma potential of 35 water insoluble drugs using deep eutectic solvents (DES) made up of a strong hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) choline chloride (ChCl) and several hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) at the molecular level. The combinations of ChCl and 75 HBDs include acid (C1-C10), alcohol (C1-C10), aldehyde (C1-C10), amide (C1-C10), amine (C1-C10), ester (C2-C10), ether (C2-C10), and ketone (C3-C10).

A Comparison of the Molecular Pharmacological Properties of Current Short, Long, and Ultra-Long-Acting β-Agonists Used for Asthma and COPD.

Pharmacol Res Perspect

October 2025

β-agonists have been used in asthma for 120 years. There are two recent changes: ultra-long-acting agonists for COPD and new asthma guidelines recommending formoterol/ICS inhalers phasing out short-acting salbutamol inhalers. Few studies directly compare the molecular pharmacological properties of short (salbutamol, terbutaline, fenoterol), long (formoterol, salmeterol), and ultra-long-acting (indacaterol, olodaterol, vilanterol) β-agonists.
