Universities are under pressure to increase external research funding, and some federal agencies offer programs to expand research capacity in certain kinds of institutions. However, conflicts within faculty roles and other aspects of university operations influence the effectiveness of particular strategies for increasing research activity. We review conventional approaches to increasing research, focusing on outcomes for individual faculty members and use one federally-funded effort to build cancer-related research capacity at a public university as an example to explore the impact of various strategies on research outcomes. We close with hypotheses that should be tested in future formal studies.

Background: In Canada, the Indigenous population is the youngest and fastest growing, yet ongoing health disparities for Indigenous peoples are widely recognized. There is a concerning lack of research on childhood disabilities and health conditions in Indigenous populations in Canada. For children with disabilities and chronic health conditions, ongoing access to rehabilitation services, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and audiology, is critical in promoting positive health and developmental outcomes.

This study explored the impact of college students' disclosure of mental health problems on faculty well-being. Twenty-nine full- and part-time faculty who experienced a student disclosure related to mental health during their career were recruited from a mid-size, private liberal arts university. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews explored faculty experiences with student mental health disclosures and its impact on faculty well-being.

Understanding the diversity of microscopic hyphomycetes is an ongoing effort, and many species remain undescribed. While studying lichen organismal composition in western Canada, metagenomic data revealed the presence of an unknown species of (, Ascomycota), a genus of pollen-parasitic fungus with no previous records in the region. We developed genus-specific primers to amplify DNA in lichen and adjacent substrate extractions, successfully detecting multiple lineages of across a wide geographic range within North America.

The 247-keV state in ^{54}Sc, populated in the β decay of ^{54}Ca, is reported here as a nanosecond isomer with a half-life of 26.0(22) ns. The state is interpreted as the 1^{+} member of the πf_{7/2}⊗νf_{5/2} spin-coupled multiplet, which decays to the 3^{+},πf_{7/2}⊗νp_{1/2} ground state.

Humanitarian crises, particularly in conflict zones, create cascading disruptions that impact every aspect of daily life, including health and disease outcomes. While international humanitarian frameworks categorize these crises into discrete operational clusters, affected populations experience them as interwoven, systemic failures. This study examines how conflict-induced disruptions transform a preventable and typically self-limiting disease-Hepatitis A-into a fatal outcome.
