Article Abstract

Objective: Given the controversy surrounding the question of whether there are direct or causal effects of exposure to maternal smoking during pregnancy (SDP) on offspring outcomes such as substance use during the adolescent years, we sought to test, on a preliminary basis, within- and between-family associations of SDP and initiation of substance use early in adolescence (by age 15 years) using a discordant sibling design.

Method: We used a sibling-comparison approach in a sample of 173 families drawn from the state of Missouri, wherein mothers were discordant for smoking behaviors between two different pregnancies, to test for associations of SDP and initiation of substance use in a younger adolescent cohort. The discordant sibling comparison approach allows for disentangling familial effects from direct effects of SDP through the purposeful collection of data from siblings within the same family with differential exposure.

Results: There were no between- or within-family effects of SDP on initiation of any type of substance use (alcohol, marijuana, smoking, and other drug classes), suggesting that SDP does not exert a direct effect on substance use in early adolescence.

Conclusions: Preliminary findings did not support an association of SDP and initiation of substance use in this younger adolescent sample. Studies such as this one can help build a body of evidence to explain whether associations of SDP and adolescent outcomes reflect a direct effect of SPD or may instead be attributable to familial confounders that are controlled in the discordant sibling design.

Insulin icodec (icodec) is a first-in-class once-weekly basal insulin approved for the treatment of adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Healthcare professionals (HCPs) may benefit from clear and practical guidance on translating the use of icodec from a controlled clinical trial setting into real-world clinical practice to ensure its appropriate implementation. Here, we primarily review the available evidence for icodec in T2D to provide evidence-based clinical recommendations and expert opinions to guide the use of icodec in a clinical setting.

Feeding plasma protein has been shown to have health benefits and help ameliorate stress in preweaning calves, aiding their ability to handle the challenges of weaning and initial social interactions. We hypothesized that feeding plasma proteins would improve health and growth in newly weaned calves under stress from postweaning commingling. The objectives of this study were to assess the health, growth, and stress responses of calves fed bovine plasma proteins in their grower feed, specifically evaluating whether feeding plasma proteins could reduce plasma cortisol concentrations during the transition to group housing.

SARS-CoV-2 is a positive, single-stranded RNA coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. The emergence of new variants and the limited efficacy of current antivirals demonstrate the need for novel therapeutic strategies. Here, we present the design, screening, and evaluation of antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) targeting the SARS-CoV-2 genomic and sub-genomic RNA.

Astaxanthin (AXT) alleviates inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by reducing inflammation, blocking NF-κB pathway, and modulating gut microbiota. However, the poor solubility and low bioavailability of AXT limit its applications in food. In this study, sardine protein (SDP)/konjac glucomannan (KGM)-stabilized Pickering emulsion gels (SKEGs) were developed for AXT delivery for IBD intervention.
