Some neuropsychiatric disease, including schizophrenia, may originate during prenatal development, following periods of gestational hypoxia and placental oxidative stress. Here we investigated if gestational hypoxia promotes damaging secretions from the placenta that affect fetal development and whether a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant MitoQ might prevent this. Gestational hypoxia caused low birth-weight and changes in young adult offspring brain, mimicking those in human neuropsychiatric disease. Exposure of cultured neurons to fetal plasma or to secretions from the placenta or from model trophoblast barriers that had been exposed to altered oxygenation caused similar morphological changes. The secretions and plasma contained altered microRNAs whose targets were linked with changes in gene expression in the fetal brain and with human schizophrenia loci. Molecular and morphological changes in vivo and in vitro were prevented by a single dose of MitoQ bound to nanoparticles, which were shown to localise and prevent oxidative stress in the placenta but not in the fetus. We suggest the possibility of developing preventative treatments that target the placenta and not the fetus to reduce risk of psychiatric disease in later life.

Introduction: Micro-RNAs (miRNAs) participate in different biological processes, including fetal hypoxia. In this work, we aimed to evaluate the existence of a miRNA differential expression profile in maternal blood of pregnancies affected with late-onset fetal growth restriction (LO-FGR).
Methods: In a prospective study, a group of 35 fetuses were evaluated with Doppler ultrasound after 36 weeks.

Background: More than 85% of very preterm infants (born <32 weeks' gestation) breathe spontaneously within 1 min of birth, however, more than 60% of infants receive positive pressure ventilation. Face mask application soon after birth might suppress breathing through the trigeminal nerve reflex, causing vocal cord closure and hypoxia. Emerging evidence suggests a potential link between maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection during early pregnancy and the development of congenital heart defects (CHD) in offspring. Although vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is rare, the virus has been associated with placental complications and increased maternal morbidity. Recent studies from China report increased rates of CHD and anomalies such as situs inversus when infection occurs during gestational weeks 4-6, a critical window for cardiac development.

Background: Subamniotic hemorrhage, a rare condition involving bleeding between the amniotic membrane and fetal chorionic plate, presents diagnostic challenges.
Case Presentation: A 35-year-old woman at 37 weeks of gestation who presented with lower abdominal discomfort and decreased fetal movements came to our emergency department. Ultrasound revealed medium-strong echoes in the amniotic fluid and inhomogeneous echoes around the umbilical cord.
