Article Abstract

Unlabelled: The extensional rheology (ER) of saliva is a property associated with its ability to coat surfaces and is important for the maintenance of a normal mouth feeling. Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are expressed in the oral cavity and this study investigated how the sensory effects of TRP channel agonists modify the ER of saliva. Healthy volunteers rinsed with solutions containing a TRP agonist. Unstimulated whole mouth saliva (WMS) was collected prior to rinsing and WMS was collected during the first and second minutes after the mouth rinse. The Spinnbarkeit of the collected saliva was measured using a Neva Meter. The nonivamide (TRPV1) mouth rinse increased WMS ER from 37.0 (± 6.3) mm to 49.3 (± 5.1) mm when compared with the vehicle control, which itself had no effect on WMS ER. However, this effect was short-lived and ER of WMS was not increased in the second minute after the nonivamide mouth rinse. The menthol (TRPM8) mouth rinse resulted in an increase up to 57.8 (± 7.8) mm in WMS ER from the vehicle control and returned to control levels in the second minute. The cinnamaldehyde (TRPA1) mouth rinse resulted in no change in WMS ER. It can be concluded that nonivamide and menthol mouth rinsing has a short-term effect of increasing WMS ER, an effect not observed after cinnamaldehyde rinsing. We hypothesize that the activation of some TRP channels in the oral cavity results in changes in the salivary protein composition that in turn alters WMS ER.

Practical Applications: Identifying compounds that modify the physical properties of saliva in a desirable way is important in developing treatments for conditions associated with changes in the physical properties of saliva such as xerostomia (also known as dry mouth). Furthermore, understanding the rheology of saliva contributes to the elucidation of food oral processing which is of importance to food manufacturers.

ZnCl inhibits postharvest disease on pear and crabapple by inducing autophagy of Penicillium expansum.

Fungal Biol

October 2025

Institute of Food Bioscience and Technology, College of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, Zhejiang, China. Electronic address:

Penicillium expansum is a phytopathogen causing postharvest disease of many fruits, which has led to enormous losses. Therefore, it is of great significance to take efficient methods to control this notorious phytopathogen. In this study, zinc, an essential trace element for human body, has been found to be able to effectively inhibit the P.

This study investigates the impact of a sweetened acidic beverage, an apple juice (J) consumption on the tribological properties, viscoelasticity, and protein concentration/ composition of human saliva. Using a combination of tribological measurements, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), and protein analysis, we assessed how J may affect saliva's lubricating behaviour and adsorbed salivary film characteristics compared to water (control). Tribological results revealed that saliva (collected from 32 healthy adults) exposed to water or J exhibited increased friction when compared to unstimulated whole mouth saliva (uWMS), particularly within the boundary lubrication regime.

Dual anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Xipayi Mouth Rinse on radiation-induced oral mucositis: ethnopharmacological and preclinical evidence.

J Ethnopharmacol

August 2025

Beijing Research Institute of Chinese Medicine, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, No. 11 North 3rd Ring East Road, Chao-Yang District, Beijing, 100029, China. Electronic address:

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Xipayi Mouth Rinse (XPY), a traditional Uyghur medicine formulation derived from Galla Turcica, has long been used to treat "oral heat-toxin syndromes," which closely resemble modern clinical presentations of radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM). Despite promising clinical observations, its pharmacological mechanisms remain unclear.

Aim Of The Study: To evaluate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of XPY in RIOM and to elucidate its chemical constituents and underlying mechanisms using integrated pharmacological approaches.

As zinc is important for the fertilization competency of sperms and oocytes, we investigated the effects of zinc chloride (ZnCl) supplementation during in vitro fertilization (IVF) on porcine oocyte fertilization and development. We evaluated the effects of ZnCl concentration (0, 1, 10, and 20 μg/mL) on the quality of frozen-thawed boar spermatozoa cultured for 5 h and on oocyte fertilization and embryo development after IVF. Spermatozoa from three different boars were additionally tested.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different decontamination protocols on the bonding strength of MDP-containing resin cement to saliva-contaminated zirconia ceramic.

Methods: 144 zirconia samples (12 mmx12 mmx1.2 mm) were prepared from 4Y-TZP and 6Y-TZP blocks, sandblasted with 50 μm Al₂O₃, and contaminated with artificial saliva.
