Article Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of the thyroglobulin (Tg) level in adults as a nutritional biomarker of iodine status and to identify the factors related to the serum Tg level.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in adult populations of areas differing in iodine nutrition from three provinces (Autonomous Region) in China. Serum levels of thyroid hormones and Tg as well as thyroid autoantibodies were measured. The thyroid volume and nodule were measured by ultrasound. A multivariate linear regression analysis was used to assess iodine intake and other indeterminate factors associated with the serum Tg level.

Results: A total of 573 adults were recruited for this study. The serum Tg levels differed significantly among the three groups (22.27 μg/L, 9.73 μg/L and 15.77 μg/L in the excess, more-than-adequate, and deficient groups, respectively). The results of multivariate linear regression analysis indicate that excess and deficient iodine intake, goiter, thyroid nodule, hypothyroidism are significantly related with higher Tg level, and TgAb positivity is significantly related with lower serum Tg.

Conclusion: The serum Tg level reflects abnormal thyroid function and is a sensitive functional biomarker of iodine nutrition status.

Despite the generally favorable prognosis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) following surgery and radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, approximately 10% of cases eventually develop resistance to RAI. This condition, known as radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid carcinoma (RAIR-DTC), is associated with a poor prognosis, with a 10-year survival rate of only 10% from the time of metastasis detection. The limited availability of safe and effective alternative treatments poses a significant challenge to clinical management.

Background And Purpose: Hypoxia for head and neck cancer (HNC) can be imaged with positron emission tomography (PET) using F-Fluoroazomycin-arabinoside (FAZA) but is not used routinely. In contrast, fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET visualizing tumor metabolism is routinely used in radiotherapy (RT) of HNC patients. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) can generate an iodine concentration (IC) map visualizing the perfused blood volume.

131I (iodide) accumulates in the thyroid and may affect thyroid tissue. Mechanisms behind such effects are not known. The aim was to investigate early changes in protein expression in thyroid and plasma from mice injected with 131I as iodide.

Cancer of the thyroid is a endocrine cancer. Although most patients achieve favorable outcomes with surgical resection, radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression therapy, a subset progresses to advanced or refractory disease. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) blocking the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway reactivate T cells, enabling them to identify and eradicate malignant cells, thus reinstating immune surveillance against tumors.

Iodine is an essential trace element, and its deficiency continues to pose a significant global health burden. Reliable biomarkers such as urinary iodine concentration (UIC), thyroglobulin, thyroid volume, and breast milk iodine levels are well-established for assessing individual and population iodine status. However, mechanistic studies into iodine metabolism and distribution remain limited by the use of the radionuclide iodine-131 which imposes practical limitations on experimental design, cost, and safety.
