Article Abstract

Background: Allergic sensitization might be influenced by the lipids present in allergens, which can be recognized by natural killer T (NKT) cells on antigen-presenting cells (APCs). The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of olive pollen lipids in human APCs, including monocytes as well as monocyte-derived macrophages (Mϕ) and dendritic cells (DCs).

Methods: Lipids were extracted from olive (Olea europaea) pollen grains. Invariant (i)NKT cells, monocytes, Mϕ, and DCs were obtained from buffy coats of healthy blood donors, and their cell phenotype was determined by flow cytometry. iNKT cytotoxicity was measured using a lactate dehydrogenase assay. Gene expression of CD1A and CD1D was performed by RT-PCR, and the production of IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, and TNF-α cytokines by monocytes, Mϕ, and DCs was measured by ELISA.

Results: Our results showed that monocytes and monocyte-derived Mϕ treated with olive pollen lipids strongly activate iNKT cells. We observed several phenotypic modifications in the APCs upon exposure to pollen-derived lipids. Both Mϕ and monocytes treated with olive pollen lipids showed an increase in CD1D gene expression, whereas upregulation of cell surface CD1d protein occurred only in Mϕ. Furthermore, DCs differentiated in the presence of human serum enhance their surface CD1d expression when exposed to olive pollen lipids. Finally, olive pollen lipids were able to stimulate the production of IL-6 but downregulated the production of lipopolysaccharide- induced IL-10 by Mϕ.

Conclusions: Olive pollen lipids alter the phenotype of monocytes, Mϕ, and DCs, resulting in the activation of NKT cells, which have the potential to influence allergic immune responses.

Exploring Reproductive Timing in Olive Tree: Male Meiosis and Anthesis Events.

Plants (Basel)

August 2025

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Perugia, Borgo XX Giugno 74, 06121 Perugia, Italy.

The timing of male meiosis plays a pivotal role in ensuring successful pollination and may represent a critical window during which environmental stressors can significantly impact reproductive outcomes. In anemophilous plants, both the quantity of microspores produced and the development of viable pollen are particularly susceptible to external influences, such as fluctuating climatic conditions. This study undertakes a comprehensive analysis of reproductive features, focusing on the meiotic events of male gametogenesis and the phenological phases from the onset to full flowering in olive from central Italy.

Concomitant sensitisation to non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) from olive pollen (Ole e 7) and peach (Pru p 3) has been observed in the south of Spain. In the search for reasons to explain this observation, we studied a potential causal relationship between Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) molecules and nsLTP sensitisation. For this purpose, eighteen Ole e 7-monosensitised (MONOLE) patients, 22 Pru p 3-monosensitised (MONPRU) patients, and 22 bisensitised (BI) patients were genotyped for HLA class II alleles.

Abiotic stresses increasingly threaten wheat ( L.) productivity by impairing pollen development and fertilization, yet the molecular regulators that coordinate reproductive success with environmental resilience remain underexplored. Here, we present a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the Pollen I (POEI) protein family in common wheat.

Pollen aeroallergens cause up to 40 % of respiratory allergies and are challenging to control due to their widespread distribution in the environment. The pollen of Ligustrum lucidum (privet) is a significant source of inhalant allergens. However, despite its clinical relevance, the protein composition of L.

Sensitizations to aeroallergens in Israel: Prevalences and profiles.

Allergol Immunopathol (Madr)

July 2025

Clalit Health Services, Northern District, Nazareth, Israel.

Background: Most of the literature on aeroallergen sensitization have been generated in North America and Western Europe.

Objectives: To determine aeroallergen sensitization prevalences and patterns among patients with physician-diagnosed allergic rhinitis (AR) in Israel.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational study of sensitization to 20 aeroallergen extracts in skin prick tests (SPTs) among consecutive pediatric and adult patients with AR attending the allergy clinic at Emek Medical Center (Afula, Israel) and an affiliated regional outpatient clinic (Nazareth, Israel) from 2021 to 2023.
