Accurate timing estimates of when participants acquire HIV in HIV prevention trials are necessary for determining antibody levels at acquisition. The Antibody-Mediated Prevention (AMP) Studies showed that a passively administered broadly neutralizing antibody can prevent the acquisition of HIV from a neutralization-sensitive virus. We developed a pipeline for estimating the date of detectable HIV acquisition (DDA) in AMP Study participants using diagnostic and viral sequence data.

Chronic hepatitis C mortality in Brazil from 2000 to 2019: An analysis of multiple causes of death.

Clinics (Sao Paulo)

September 2025

Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP), São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Introduction: Conventional mortality statistics that concentrate only on the underlying cause of death may offer a limited view of the complexity of this condition and not fully capture the true extent of mortality from hepatitis C.

Objective: To describe and analyze deaths due to chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in Brazil, as both a underlying and multiple cause of death, from 2000 to 2019.

Methods: This ecological study used data extracted from the Mortality Information System and descriptively analyzed causes of death and sociodemographic variables for the deceased.

Identification of microorganisms in a biological sample is a crucial step in diagnostics, pathogen screening, biomedical research, evolutionary studies, agriculture, and biological threat assessment. While progress has been made in studying larger organisms, there is a need for an efficient and scalable method that can handle thousands of whole genomes for organisms with high mutation rates and genetic diversity such as single stranded viruses. In this study, we developed a novel method to identify subsequences for detection of a given species/subspecies in a (meta)genomic sample using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method.

Early on-treatment LSM reliably predicts liver-related events in CHB patients with significant fibrosis and cirrhosis.

Hepatology

September 2025

Liver Research Center, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, State Key Lab of Digestive Health, National Clinical Research Center of Digestive Diseases, Beijing Key Laboratory of Translational Medicine on Liver Cirrhosis, Beijing, China.

Background: Evidence comparing longitudinal liver stiffness measurements (LSM) dynamics to on-treatment LSM for predicting clinical outcomes in patients receiving etiology therapy is limited.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of on-treatment LSM in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) receiving antiviral therapy.

Design: Patients with CHB and significant fibrosis or cirrhosis were included in this prospective cohort.

Safety, effectiveness, and acceptability of antenatal penicillin allergy evaluation: a systematic review.

Objective: Approximately 8-13% of pregnant patients report penicillin allergy. Penicillins and other beta-lactams are widely used in pregnancy but often avoided in these patients, resulting in suboptimal therapy, antimicrobial resistance, higher costs, and increased morbidity for patients and neonates. True penicillin allergy is rare and 95% of unverified penicillin allergies are delabelled on evaluation.
