It is widely held that the extinction of a conditioned response is more context specific than its initial acquisition. One proposed explanation is that context serves to disambiguate the meaning of a stimulus. Using a procedure that equated the learning histories of the contexts, we show that the memory of an appetitive Pavlovian association can be highly context specific despite being unambiguous. This result is inconsistent with predictions of the Rescorla-Wagner model of learning but in line with configural accounts of contextual control of behavior. We propose an explanatory model in which context serves to modulate the gain of associative strength and which expands upon the configural idea of unitary representations of context and conditioned stimuli.

Polydrug abuse is the persistent self-administration of more than one reinforcing drug. The present study provided rhesus monkeys concurrent access to two drugs: 8% alcohol and solutions of either cocaine or methadone. The liquids were available under concurrent nonindependent fixed-ratio (FR) schedules across increasing and then decreasing ratio sizes.

Immune cells, such as macrophages, stimulated by several types of inorganic ions released from bioactive glasses secrete cytokines that promote and inhibit bone formation. In this study, the effects of borate-ion-stimulated mouse macrophages (RAW264) on the osteogenic differentiation of mouse bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (KUSA-A1) are investigated. KUSA-A1 is cultured with a borate-ion-containing medium and RAW264-conditioned medium, which contained the secretome released from boron-stimulated RAW264, and its osteogenic differentiation is evaluated.

Microglia regulate neuronal circuit plasticity. Disrupting their homeostatic function has detrimental effects on neuronal circuit health. Neuroinflammation contributes to the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), with several microglial activation genes linked to increased risk for these conditions.

Learning when to initiate or withhold actions is essential for survival, requiring the integration of past experiences with new information to adapt to changing environments. The prelimbic cortex (PL) plays a central role in this process, with a stable PL neuronal population (ensemble) recruited during operant reward learning to encode response execution. However, it is unknown how this established reward-learning ensemble adapts to changing reward contingencies, such as reward omission during extinction.

Background: Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC), a novel neuroprotective therapy, has broad potential for reducing the occurrence and recurrence of cerebrovascular events, yet its mechanisms are not incompletely understood. The aim of this study is to investigate whether RIC alleviates apoptosis, inflammation, and reperfusion injury in rat models of ischemic stroke by regulating the Elabela (ELA)-apelin-Apelin receptor (APJ) system.
Methods: We established a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) with ischemia-reperfusion injury, and RIC was administered twice daily for 3 days post-MCAO.
