Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a persistent inflammatory condition marked by the destruction of the intestinal mucosal barrier, infiltration of inflammatory cells, and ulceration. M1/M2 macrophage polarization plays an imperative function in the regulation of inflammation through the nuclear factor-kappa B (NFκB) signaling pathway and modulating microRNA-155 (miR-155). Recent studies have highlighted the anti-ulcerogenic and colo-protective properties of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.

Context: Pubertal timing is tightly controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Makorin RING finger protein 3 (MKRN3) is an inhibitor of the HPG axis and microRNA-30b (miR-30b) is proposed to act as a direct regulator of hypothalamic MKRN3 expression. Similarly, microRNA-155 (miR-155) targets CEBPB, which is also suggested to be involved in the activation of the HPG axis.

Background: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia is a severe infection with high mortality, where alveolar macrophages (AMs) play a critical role in host defense through M1 polarization. MicroRNA-155 (miR-155) is known to modulate immune responses, but its specific role in AM polarization during MRSA pneumonia remains unclear. This study investigates how miR-155 regulates M1 macrophage polarization and MRSA pneumonia.

The microRNA-155 exists in two forms, miR-155-5p and miR-155-3p, produced from either strand of the double-stranded precursor of miR-155 in a mutually exclusive manner. The more abundant and better-studied miR-155-5p has been implicated in numerous biological processes, with dysregulated expression observed in various human diseases. miR-155-5p plays an essential role in supporting inflammatory responses in macrophages.

Blood transfusion, as the main treatment, harbors diverse side effects, including alloimmunization to RBC antigens, exacerbating hemolysis, and blood requirements.
