Two glycoclusters constituted by four fully acetylated β-acetylmannosamine residues linked through trimethylenethioureido spacers to a calix[4]arene core and differing for the presence of methoxy or propoxy groups at the lower rim were synthesized. One of the two compounds is fixed in the 1,3-alternate geometry by the presence of the propoxy groups, while the other is potentially free to assume one of the different geometries allowed in calix[4]arene. Their similar NMR spectra in chloroform clearly suggest the same 1,3-alternate geometry. Both compounds were submitted to a conformational investigation with the DFT approach at the standard B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. The two glycocalixarenes showed a large conformational preference for the same geometry that put the mannosamine moiety of one substituent close to the thioureido group of the opposite substituent. This allows the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds and originates a series of through-space close contacts. A comparison with the NOESY maps evidence an excellent correspondence between experimental and theoretical data, thus giving an experimental validation of the highly symmetrical conformation that the two glycocalixarenes assume in apolar solvents.

Metal cation-π interactions, involving electrostatic forces between a metal cation and an aromatic π-electron cloud, play a critical role in molecular recognition, catalysis, and the design of functional materials. In this work, we combined synthetic, terahertz (THz) spectroscopic, and structural/computational study to provide valuable insights into the nature and characterization of these interactions in a tailor-made silver corrole complex, where a 2-(3-(2-formylphenoxy)propoxy)phenyl group creates an appropriate electronic environment around the silver(III) center for possible metal cation-π(arene) interactions. The observed close Ag···C distances in the crystal structure support the metal cation-π interaction.

The synthesis of Ara-β-(1 → 2)-Ara glycosyl donor containing TBDPS groups starting from the corresponding glycoside with 4-(3-azidopropoxy)phenyl aglycone was performed in high yield. The obtained glycosyl donor was successfully used in the stereocontrolled synthesis of 4-(2-azidoethoxy)phenyl glycosides of linear β-(1 → 2)-, α-(1 → 5)-tetra- and branched β-(1 → 2)-, α-(1 → 3)-, α-(1 → 5)-linked dodecaarabinofuranosides related to the fragments of mycobacterial polysaccharides. These compounds are valuable for the preparation of conjugates that can be used as antigens in the diagnosis of mycobacterial infections.

During an infection, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) mediates immune responses in insects and later epoxyoctadecamonoenoic acids (EpOMEs) are produced from linoleic acid to suppress excessive and unnecessary immune responses. Intracellular signaling pathway by which these oxylipins suppress the immune responses was previously unclear. This study demonstrated that EpOMEs antagonize the secondary messengers induced by PGE2 in a lepidopteran species, Maruca vitrata.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of BGP-15 ((Z)-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-(piperidin-1-yl) propoxy) nicotinimidamide) on goat sperm during cryopreservation. The semen from six rams was diluted with a soybean lecithin-based extender containing different doses of BGP-15 (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 μM). After the freeze-thawing process, sperm characteristics, plasma membrane integrity and functionality, acrosomal status, mitochondria activity, apoptosis status, and gene expression of post-thawed ram spermatozoa were assessed.

Objectives: To synthesize a 3D printing resin with antibacterial and long-term fluoride-releasing properties.
Methods: (4,4-Bis-4-[2‑hydroxy-3-(2-methacryloyloxy)propoxy]-phenyl-pentanol-amine)-N,N-diacetic acid zirconium (IV) fluoride complex was synthesized from 4,4-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-pentanoic acid and monitored using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The synthesized complex was incorporated into a urethane-acrylate-based (UA) resin at 5 wt% and 10 wt% (5F-UA and 10F-UA groups, respectively).
