Article Abstract

Raman spectroscopy is adopted to detect the low-content benzene concentrations in gasoline products. Due to the peak overlap of benzene and other species in the gasoline spectrum, the associated statistical regression methods cannot make stable predictions unless there are enough training samples. To extend their extrapolation to small-size training sets, we propose the method of partial least squares based on a spectral pretreatment of interference peak subtraction (IPS-PLS). During the analysis, after spectral interpolation and baseline removal, we extract the benzene peak by interference peak subtraction (IPS), and then partial least squares (PLS) is applied to make a prediction. The experimental results demonstrate that, IPS can extract benzene information effectively, and help to decrease principal components needed by PLS, thus IPS-PLS is superior to direct PLS with small-size training sets, and depends less on the training sample distribution. Meanwhile, IPS-PLS can reach the standard of ASTM 3606-10 with the least of 9 training samples, while keeping its max predictive error less than 0.1254% (v/v), which shows promising prospects in gasoline quality test.

Yerba mate, a key crop in South America, is prized for its pleasant taste and high organoleptic quality, often linked to lower branch content. To quantify branch content and authenticate high-quality samples (less than 30 % m/m branch content), a Chemometrics-assisted Color Histogram-based Analytical System (CACHAS) was employed. Organophosphorus nerve agents (OPNAs), including G-agents, EGA (ethyltabun, phosphonamidic acid, P-cyano-N,N-diethyl-, ethyl ester) and V-agents, VM (O-ethyl S-(2-diethylaminoethyl) phosphonothiolate), are highly toxic chemical warfare agents (CWAs) with severe risks to human health and environmental security. This study proposes a chemometric-driven framework for forensic tracing of their synthetic pathways using high-resolution GC × GC-TOFMS. By integrating advanced statistical analysis, we identified 160 synthesis-associated chemical attribution signatures (CAS) for EGA and 138 process-specific CAS for VM, with 11 overlapping markers, including ethoxyphosphates and diethylaminoethylamine derivatives.

Language learning and use relies on domain-specific, domain-general cognitive and sensory-motor functions. Using fMRI during story listening and behavioral tests, we investigated brain-behavior associations between linguistic and non-linguistic measures in individuals with varied multilingual experience and reading skills, including typical reading participants (TRs) and dyslexic readers (DRs). Partial Least Square Correlation revealed a main component linking cognitive, linguistic, and phonological measures to amodal/associative brain areas.
