Triatomines are hematophagous insects that feed on the blood of vertebrates from different taxa, but can occasionally also take fluids from invertebrate hosts, including other insects. During the blood ingestion process, these insects can acquire diverse parasites that can later be transmitted to susceptible vertebrates if they complete their development inside bugs. Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, and Trypanosoma rangeli are protozoan parasites transmitted by triatomines, the latter only transmitted by Rhodnius spp. The present work makes an extensive revision of studies evaluating triatomine-trypanosome interaction, with special focus on Rhodnius prolixus interacting with the two parasites. The sequences of events encompassing the development of these trypanosomes inside bugs and the consequent responses of insects to this infection, as well as many pathological effects produced by the parasites are discussed.

Crowding can result in greater disease transmission, yet crowded hosts may also remove infectious propagules from the environment, thereby lowering the encounter rate and infectious dose received by conspecifics. We combined experimental and modelling work to examine the impact of crowding of butterfly larvae on the per-capita risk of infection by a protozoan that is transmitted via the larval food plant, and the resulting infection load in adult butterflies. We reared larvae at different densities and exposed them to low and high doses of parasites.

Understanding why Diptera, such as mosquitoes and sand flies, feed on humans is crucial in defining them as vectors of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and leishmaniasis. Determining their attraction to humans (anthropophily) helps in assessing the risk of disease transmission, designing effective vector control strategies, and monitoring the effectiveness of existing control measures. An important question is whether they are specifically attracted to humans in preference to other mammals or whether there is something else at play.

Zoonotic infections-bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic-can spread from domestic or wild animals to humans, either directly or via intermediate vectors. In vascular and endovascular surgery, infections are rare and usually caused by common bacteria with familiar presentations. In contrast, zoonotically transmitted, atypically behaving organisms pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their elusive nature and resistance to conventional detection methods.

Background: In the context of this paper, airport/seaport malaria denotes the accidental relocation by air or sea of a malaria infected mosquito to Europe, a non-endemic area, the survival of the transported mosquito and subsequent blood meal and infection of a local person. Autochthonous malaria refers to locally transmitted cases of malaria in Europe.
Methods: The systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023444243).
