Article Abstract

A retrospective cohort design was used to study the impact of a multiplex respiratory virus panel polymerase chain reaction test in 186 adult patients with suspected influenza-like illness. Decisions regarding continuation of empirical antiviral therapy appear to be impacted by the test. However, the impact on reducing antibiotic use remains unclear.

A key challenge in PET systems is collecting large amount of data with the most accurate information-time, energy, and position-to produce high-resolution images while limiting the number of channels to reduce costs and improve data collection efficiency. The new Ultra-High-performance Brain (UHB) scanner under development aims to tackle this issue, using a semi-monolithic detector that combines pixelated arrays and monolithic designs, along with signal multiplexing techniques. Approach.

Bladder cancer (BC) remains a common malignancy, with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) comprising 20 % of cases and a poor 5-year survival rate of ∼50 %. While neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by radical cystectomy is the standard treatment for locally advanced disease, NAC is limited by toxicity and non-response in many patients. Predictive biomarkers are urgently needed to guide treatment decisions.

Significance of Th1 and Th2 Cell Densities and Th1/Th2 Cytokine Profiles in Colorectal Cancer.

Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev

September 2025

Translational Medicine Research Unit, Medical Research Center Oulu, Oulu University Hospital, and University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland.

Background: T-cell densities are associated with colorectal cancer outcome, but the significance of specific Th cell subsets is incompletely understood. We aimed to investigate the role of Th1 and Th2 cells and associated cytokine profiles.

Methods: We used multiplex IHC to identify Th1 and Th2 cells on tumor samples of more than 2,000 patients with colorectal cancer (three independent cohorts).

Evaluation of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes as recommended by current guidelines is largely based on stromal regions within the tumor. In the context of epithelial malignancies, the epithelial region and the epithelial-stromal interface are not assessed, because of technical difficulties in manually discerning lymphocytes when admixed with epithelial tumor cells. The inability to quantify immune cells in epithelial-associated areas may negatively impact evaluation of patient response to immune checkpoint therapies.
