Article Abstract

Background: The Gait Deviation Index summarizes overall gait 'quality', based on kinematic data from a 3-dimensional gait analysis. However, it is unknown which clinical outcomes may affect the Gait Deviation Index in patients with primary hip osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between Gait Deviation Index as a measure of gait 'quality' and hip muscle strength and between Gait Deviation Index and patient-reported outcomes in patients with primary hip osteoarthritis.

Method: Forty-seven patients (34 males), aged 61.1 ± 6.7 years, with BMI 27.3 ± 3.4 (kg/m2) and with severe primary hip osteoarthritis underwent 3-dimensional gait analysis. Mean Gait Deviation Index, pain after walking and maximal isometric hip muscle strength (flexor, extensor, and abductor) were recorded. All patients completed the 'Physical Function Short-form of the Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS-Physical Function) and the Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score subscales for pain (HOOS-Pain) and quality-of-life (HOOS-QOL).

Results: Mean Gait Deviation Index was positively associated with hip abduction strength (p<0.01, r = 0.40), hip flexion strength (p = 0.01, r = 0.37), HOOS-Physical Function (p<0.01, r = 0.41) HOOS-QOL (p<0.01, r = 0.41), and negatively associated with HOOS-Pain after walking (p<0.01, r = -0.45). Adjusting the analysis for walking speed did not affect the association.

Conclusion: Patients with the strongest hip abductor and hip flexor muscles had the best gait 'quality'. Furthermore, patients with higher physical function, quality of life scores and lower pain levels demonstrated better gait 'quality'. These findings indicate that interventions aimed at improving hip muscle strength and pain management may to a moderate degree improve the overall gait 'quality' in patients with primary hip OA.

PurposeThis study aimed to test a robotic supine gait training (RSGT) device's safety when treating children and adolescents with a variety of diagnoses, to ensure their safety and the standardization of clinical practices.MethodsThis retrospective observational study included 280 patients who underwent one or more treatment sessions with a RSGT device (DPA Med) at the Nantes Regional Children's and Adolescent Health Care Center. These patients' medical files, indexed in the digital medical file manager program, were examined in search of evidence of adverse events presumably associated with the treatment.

The effect of script-driven emotional imagery on postural control in healthy individuals.

Gait Posture

UHasselt, REVAL Rehabilitation Research Center, Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences, Wetenschapspark 7, Diepenbeek 3590, Belgium. Electronic address:

Objective: Although emotions and postural control are strongly intertwined, more research is necessary to understand this intricate relationship. Therefore, we examined the effect of script-driven emotional imagery on postural control in healthy individuals.

Methods: Forty-four healthy participants (50 % female, median age=27) imagined three emotional imagery scripts (hostile, acceptance, relaxation) in upright standing without visual input while center of pressure (CoP) was measured (mean sway, sway velocity, , and standard deviation in antero-posterior and medio-lateral directions, and sway path and area).

To propose a functional method for locating the shoulder joint center of rotation aimed at rapid estimation of the upper limb reachable domain envelope, thereby informing ergonomic design and task optimization. In March 2024, shoulder kinematics during gait were recorded from ten adults using a three-dimensional motion-capture system. Assuming the existence of a point near the glenohumeral joint that maintains a fixed spatial relationship to the humerus and the acromion, we estimated both static and dynamic centers of rotation.

Contribution of vestibular afference to estimation of centre of mass state for stabilization of walking differs between anteroposterior and mediolateral directions.

Department of Human Movement Sciences, Faculty of Behavioral and Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam Movement Sciences, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Walking without falling requires correcting the deviations of the centre of mass (CoM) trajectory relative to the base of support. This process is partially under feedback control. We investigated whether vestibular afference contributes to estimating CoM state to stabilize walking.

[Purpose] This study aimed to determine whether a common left-right asymmetry exists in frontal plane movement during gait and to explore its relationship with resting standing posture. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-five healthy adult male participants with no history of surgery were assessed during standing and gait using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. The maximum lateral movement of the trunk and center of mass, peak of the vertical ground reaction force, and lateral position of the center of pressure were compared between the left and right stance phases.
