Aims. To examine the outcome of potential live kidney donors (PLKD) assessment program at Christchurch Hospital and, also, to review findings of Computed Tomographic (CT) renal angiograms that led to exclusion in the surgical assessment. Methods. Clinical data was obtained from the database of kidney transplants, Proton. Radiological investigations were reviewed using the hospital database, Éclair. The transplant coordinator was interviewed to clarify information about PLKD who did not proceed to surgery, and a consultant radiologist was interviewed to explain unfavorable findings on CT renal angiograms. Results. 162 PLKD were identified during the period January 04-June 08. Of those, 65 (40%) proceeded to have nephrectomy, 15 were accepted and planned to proceed to surgery, 13 were awaiting further assessment, and 69 (42.5%) did not proceed to nephrectomy. Of the 162 PLKD, 142 (88%) were directed donors. The proportion of altruistic PLKD who opted out was significantly higher than that of directed PLKD (45% versus 7%, P = 0.00004). Conclusions. This audit demonstrated a positive experience of live kidney donation at Christchurch Hospital. CT renal angiogram can potentially detect incidental or controversial pathologies in the kidney and the surrounding structures. Altruistic donation remains controversial with higher rates of opting out.

The symbiosis between intestinal bacteria and the human body's physiological processes can modulate health. The intestinal microbiota is linked to the development of neurotrophic factors; therefore, it is increasingly related to the modulation of nervous system pathologies. Moreover, microbiota can interfere with inflammation and oxidative stress, which are closely linked to cardiovascular risk factors and several other inflammatory conditions, such as kidney and neurodegenerative diseases.

Background: Fetal hyperechoic kidney is an important soft marker in prenatal ultrasonography; however, the causes of this phenomenon are unclear. Therefore, we analyzed genetic diagnosis results, assessed pregnancy outcomes, and conducted postnatal follow-up to provide evidence for prenatal eugenics.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 94 cases with fetal hyperechoic kidneys identified between November 2017 and January 2024.

H9N2 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) remains a major threat to poultry industry. Our previously developed live-attenuated vaccine candidate rTX-NS1-128(mut) demonstrated promising immunogenicity, but its truncated NS1 gene reduced replication in MDCK cells relative to the parental rTX strain. In this study, we engineered an MDCK derived cell line (2G8D5) to enhance replication of interferon-sensitive AIV candidates.

Background: The Luminex platform, where beads are coated with single human leukocyte antigens (HLA), detects HLA antibodies with higher sensitivity and specificity compared to complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) assay and flow cross-match (FCXM). The clinical significance of donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) detected by this method is still under investigation.
Aim: To report the impact of low-level pretransplant DSAs detected by the Luminex platform on the rates of acute rejection (AR), allograft function, and long-term graft survival.

Elevated blood pressure (BP) is the most important noncommunicable disorder worldwide. Finding and effectively managing elevated BP is the single greatest public health benefit we can accomplish, as it will reduce premature death and enable patients to live longer free of the disabilities that target organ damage inflicts on the brain, heart, kidneys, and legs. Hypertension guidelines are an invaluable source of information on how to detect elevated BP, how to evaluate people for situations where hypertension is a symptom of other disorders, and how to apply the various treatments that lower BP effectively in patients.
