The most advanced epidemiological studies on health effects of air pollution assign exposure to individuals based on residential outdoor concentrations of air pollutants measured or estimated at the front-door. In order to assess to what extent this approach could cause misclassification, indoor measurements were carried out in unoccupied rooms at the front and back of a building which fronted onto a major urban road. Simultaneous measurements were also carried out at adjacent outdoor locations to the front and rear of the building. Two 15-day monitoring campaigns were conducted in the period June-December 2013 in a building located in the urban area of Bologna, Italy. Particulate matter metrics including PM2.5 mass and chemical composition, particle number concentration and size distribution were measured. Both outdoor and indoor concentrations at the front of the building substantially exceeded those at the rear. The highest front/back ratio was found for ultrafine particles with outdoor concentration at the front door 3.4 times higher than at the rear. A weak influence on front/back ratios was found for wind direction. Particle size distribution showed a substantial loss of particles within the sub-50 nm size range between the front and rear of the building and a further loss of this size range in the indoor data. The chemical speciation data showed relevant reductions for most constituents between the front and the rear, especially for traffic related elements such as Elemental Carbon, Iron, Manganese and Tin. The main conclusion of the study is that gradients in concentrations between the front and rear, both outside and inside the building, are relevant and comparable to those measured between buildings located in high and low traffic areas. These findings show high potential for misclassification in the epidemiological studies that assign exposure based on particle concentrations estimated or measured at subjects' home addresses.

Introduction: Pilots have an increased incidence of cutaneous melanoma compared to the general population; occupational exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of several potential risk factors. Cockpit windshields effectively block UVB (280-315 nm) but further analysis is needed for UVA (315-400 nm). The objective of this observational study was to assess transmission of UVA through cockpit windshields and to measure doses of UVA at pilots' skin under daytime flying conditions.

This study presents a systematic analysis of the impact of polymer hole transport layers (HTLs) in inverted MAPbI perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Devices were fully fabricated under regular atmospheric conditions (≈40% humidity) and low temperature (100 °C) by using Field's Metal (FM) as an alternative top electrode. The widely known π-conjugated polymers P3HT, PTB7-Th, PBDB-T, and MEH-PPV were used as HTLs, and all of them show suitable energy alignment to MAPbI, offering good moisture stability, solution processability, low cost, and attractiveness for large area and flexible PSCs.

The Bulgarian split squat (BSS) is a unilateral exercise that emphasizes hip extension more than knee extension, compared to other squat variations. This study aimed to (1) empirically verify the existence of the rear leg-derived moment (M)-a theoretically plausible but previously untested external resistive hip moment acting against the net hip extension moment (M) of the front leg-and (2) examine how stance width and forward trunk-leaning angles affect M during the BSS. Nine trained male participants performed bodyweight BSS under two stance conditions (wide and narrow) and three trunk-leaning conditions (additional, natural, and reduced forward lean).

How do environmental cues shape the coordination rules underlying collective motion in fish shoals? This question is crucial as freshwater migratory fish are globally declining due to river fragmentation, and collective motion is known to influence the effectiveness of fish pass solutions. However, experimental data on individual interactions and the effects of solid boundaries and hydrodynamic conditions remain limited. Adopting a reductionist approach - using fish pairs as the minimal shoal's unit - we examined how mean flow velocity and boundary proximity affect interaction dynamics in a riverine species.
