Two new alkaloids, plantadeprate A (1) and 1'-(4″-hydroxybutyl)plantagoguanidinic acid (2), along with three known compounds, were isolated from the seeds of Plantago depressa. Their structures were elucidated by physical data analyses including NMR, MS, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) methods. Plantadeprate A (1), a monoterpene zwitterionic guanidium, possesses a unique 5/5/6-tricyclic ring system. Its absolute configuration was determined by X-ray crystallography and computational methods. Compound 1, plumbagine D (3), and plantagoguanidinic acid (4) exhibited potential antihyperglycemic properties attributed to suppression of hepatic gluconeogenesis with inhibitory rates of 8.2%, 18.5%, and 12.5% at 40 μM, respectively.

Six minor undescribed indoloquinolizidine monoterpene alkaloids, uncarrhynchophyllines F - K (-), were isolated from an aqueous decoction of the hook-bearing stems of (gou-teng). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data analysis in combination with electron circular dichroism (ECD) and NMR calculations. Compounds - are rare indoloquinolizidine iminium zwitterions, while exhibited protective effects against APAP induced liver cell injury.

The development of nontoxic antifouling coatings in static marine environments is urgent. Herein, the successful synthesis of sulfobetaine borneol fluorinated polymers (PEASBF) by a free radical polymerization method is reported. The PEASBF coatings exhibit outstanding antifouling activity, which effectively resists the adhesion of (FITC-BSA adhesion rate: 0.

Four undescribed tryptamine-derived alkaloids, hunteriasines A - D, were isolated and identified from Hunteria umbellata (Apocynaceae), together with fifteen known indole alkaloids. The chemical structure and absolute configuration of hunteriasine A were determined by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic data analyses. Hunteriasine A, featuring with a unique scaffold comprised of tryptamine and an unprecedented "12-carbon unit" moiety, is a zwitterionic indole-derived and pyridinium-containing alkaloid.

The demand for effective and long-term durable antibacterial surfaces has been ever-growing in the past decades. A wide variety of long-lasting antibacterial surfaces developed from release-killing, active-killing, and anti-fouling strategies have demonstrated the desired effectiveness and durability so far. Most of these successful designs were developed from toxic and fossil-based materials, which failed to comply with the green design criteria.
