Article Abstract

Mandibular repositioning devices (MRDs) increase the patency of the upper airway by repositioning the mandible forward, resulting in displacement of the oropharyngeal tissues preventing upper airway collapsibility. Mandibular anterior repositioning is counteracted by muscle force from the temporalis muscle. A 39-year-old man had an osteolytic lesion with fracture of the coronoid process of the mandible secondary to wearing a MRD for sleep apnea. Continuous stress generated on the coronoid process temporalis muscle resulted in osteolysis and fracture of the coronoid process on the patient's right side, resulting in swelling and limited ability to open his mouth. The patient was managed with intravenous antibiotics to control the osteomyelitis and surgical debridement, with removal of the coronoid process of the mandible. It is unclear why the fracture only occurred on the right side. Pathologic fracture of the coronoid process due to chronic stress and secondary osteomyelitis is a rare severe complication of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome with a MRD.

Ectopic mandibular third molar associated with cystic lesion and extraoral approach: case report.

Impacted mandibular third molars are classified by its relation with the second molars and with the ascending ramus of the mandible. Ectopic third molars do not obey this classification, being possibly found in the condylar region, in the ascending ramus of the mandible, in the coronoid process or in the base of the mandible. This article aim to present a case of an ectopic mandibular third molar associated with a dentigerous cyst that was removed using a Risdon's approach.

Changes in the size of the coronoid process, due to hyperplasia or hypoplasia, may interfere with the normal range of mouth opening. Coronoid hyperplasia is a rare oral and maxillofacial disease which might result in progressive limitation of mouth opening due to the impingement of an abnormal elongated mandibular coronoid process on the zygomatic arch. This condition presents with clinical challenges due to its nonspecific nature of complaints that present in patients.

Introduction: Complex proximal ulna fractures (including comminuted olecranon fractures and fracture-dislocations of the elbow) pose challenging management due to concomitant injuries to key stabilizers (radial head, coronoid process, and collateral ligaments). This study evaluates functional and radiographic outcomes following surgical treatment and explores the prognostic value of associated injuries, age stratification, and a new coronoid-centric classification system.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 43 patients with complex proximal ulna fractures treated between 2019 and 2024, with a minimum of 12 months follow-up (mean, 28 months).

Pediatric posterior trans-olecranon fracture-dislocation of the elbow: a case report and review of literature.

Objective: Dislocations of the elbow are not common in skeletally immature patients. Herein, we present a case report on a rare pediatric posterior trans-olecranon fracture dislocation of the elbow, a type of dislocation that has never been reported in children. We aim to discuss the injury mechanism and introduce our treatment approach for this specific condition.

Department for Small Animals, Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic Surgery Service, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany.

The aim of our study was to assess the conformation of the radioulnar joint using transverse plane computed tomography in dogs with medial coronoid disease (MCD).The study included 101 elbow joints with arthroscopically confirmed MCD and 20 sound control elbow joints. To assess the conformation of the radioulnar joint, we determined the ratio for the radial head centre of supination and pronation toward the ulnar joint surface in the transverse computed tomography plane.
