Article Abstract

Through the addition of a solid-state precursor, a large-scale, transparent, and free-standing film of 1-D rutile/anatase TiO2 nanorod arrays can be fabricated by dynamically changing the acidity and concentrations of titanium and chloride ions, and creating anatase growth-friendly conditions.

Boron doped diamond (BDD) has numerous advantages as an electrode material such as having a wide aqueous solvent window, water oxidation, which is thought to produce weakly adsorbed hydroxyl radicals, low background currents, and high electrochemical stability. While BDD has received interest as an optically transparent electrode for combined UV-Vis electrochemical measurements, there are no studies which use it in applications which capitalize significantly on the properties of BDD. In this paper, we describe the use of a BDD spectroelectrochemical (SEC) electrode, BDD, fabricated from free-standing BDD (400 μm thickness) and containing laser-micromachined slot-shaped holes (360 μm wide).

Non-renewable plastics significantly challenge current sustainability efforts. Polysaccharide colloids emerge as promising contenders for alleviating the environmental impact of the packaging industry. Fungal chitin nanofibrils (ChNFs) are particularly attractive for sustainable packaging given their ease of isolation.

We have successfully produced an ultrathin freely suspended GO film, which is a biomimetic structure inspired by the transparent dragonfly wing structure. Based on a colloidal self-assembly process over a large area, solvent evaporation was applied within a limited opening geometry. The free-standing GO film shows a significant enhancement of the nonlinear optical absorption, where saturable absorption and photoinduced absorption were observed at dramatically decreased excitation fluence compared with other work on GO films dispersed on substrates.

Optical metasurfaces provide novel solutions to label-free biochemical sensing by localizing light resonantly beyond the diffraction limit, thereby selectively enhancing light-matter interactions for improved analytical performance. However, high-Q resonances in metasurfaces are usually achieved in the reflection mode, which impedes metasurface integration into compact imaging systems. Here, we demonstrate a novel metasurface platform for advanced biochemical sensing based on the physics of the bound states in the continuum (BIC) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) modes, which arise when two interfering resonances from a periodic pattern of tilted elliptic holes overlap both spectrally and spatially, creating a narrow transparency window in the mid-infrared spectrum.

Underwater Superoleophobic and Transparent Films with Mechanical Robustness and High Durability in Harsh Environments.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Underwater superoleophobic and transparent (UST) films are promising in applications, such as advanced optical devices in marine environments. However, the mechanical robustness and durability in harsh environments of the existing UST films are still unsatisfactory. In this work, we present a free-standing nacre-inspired mineralized UST (NIM-UST) film with high aragonite content and excellent mechanical properties toward robust underwater superoleophobicity on two surfaces and transparency (94%) in harsh seawater environments.
