The ethanolic extract of the root of Piper methysticum was found to inhibit melanogenesis in MSH-activated B16 melanoma cells. Flavokawains B and C were isolated from this extract based on their anti-melanogenesis activity and found to inhibit melanogenesis with IC50 values of 7.7μM and 6.9μM, respectively. Flavokawain analogs were synthesized through a Claisen-Schmidt condensation of their corresponding acetophenones and benzaldehydes and were evaluated in terms of their tyrosinase inhibitory and anti-melanogenesis activities. Compound 1b was the most potent of these with an IC50 value of 2.3μM in melanogenesis inhibition assays using MSH-activated B16 melanoma cells.

The kava plant is native to the Pacific Islands. A mildly psychoactive beverage, also referred to as kava, made from the roots and stems of this plant, is widely ingested in these regions for social, cultural, and medicinal purposes. In recent years, kava extracts in various forms have been used in conventional Western and alternative medicine.

Clarifying the determinants of environmental partitioning between ectomycorrhizal (ECM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) associations may inform predictions of the effects of climate change on global vegetation patterns, nutrient cycling, and carbon storage in forest ecosystems. Nothofagus species (southern beeches) are the only widespread ECM trees in the humid temperate forests of the southern hemisphere. Despite long-standing interest in spatial and temporal partitioning of forest environments between Nothofagus and other tree species in South America, New Zealand, and Australia, rarely has this research adopted a mycorrhizal focus.

Root-knot nematode () causes up to 30% yield loss in tomato () worldwide, and reliance on synthetic nematicides poses serious environmental and health risks. This study explores sustainable alternatives by evaluating the nematicidal potential of sp and essential oils and extracts, along with and , under both and microplot conditions. Essential oils exhibited significant juvenile mortality and egg hatching inhibition at low concentrations, outperforming solvent extracts.

Background: Characteristics of infective endocarditis vary by age and sex.
Objectives: The aim of the study was to identify how age and sex impact mortality due to infective endocarditis in high-income countries.
Methods: The World Health Organization mortality database was analyzed to determine trends in mortality from infective endocarditis in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Australia, the United States, and Canada between 2000 and 2021.

Piper methysticum, known as "kava", is a plant endemic to and historically consumed in the Pacific islands. The roots contain psychoactive kavalactones with sedating and anxiolytic effects. While often marketed for anxiety or as a safe alcohol alternative, dermopathy and more rarely hepatotoxicity are well described with heavy use.
