Article Abstract

An innovative processing strategy for fabricating soft structures that possess electric- and humidity-driven active/passive actuation capabilities along with touch- and humidity-sensing properties is reported. The intrinsically multifunctional material comprises an active thin layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly-(styrene sulfonate) in a double-layered structure with a silicone elastomer and provides an opportunity toward developing a new class of smart structures for soft robotics.

Estimation of Brachial-Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity With Hierarchical Regression Model From Wrist Photoplethysmography and Electrocardiographic Signals: Method Design.

JMIR Biomed Eng

August 2025

Cardiovascular Center and Divisions of Cardiology and Hospital Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital, No.7, Chung Shan S Rd, Taipei, 100225, Taiwan, 886 2-2312-3456.

Background: Photoplethysmography (PPG) signals captured by wearable devices can provide vascular age information and support pervasive and long-term monitoring of personal health condition.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to estimate brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) from wrist PPG and electrocardiography (ECG) from smartwatch.

Methods: A total of 914 wrist PPG and ECG sequences and 278 baPWV measurements were collected via the smartwatch from 80 men and 82 women with average age of 63.

Preclinical stroke research faces a critical translational gap, with animal studies failing to reliably predict clinical efficacy. To address this, the field is moving toward rigorous, multicenter preclinical randomized controlled trials (mpRCTs) that mimic phase 3 clinical trials in several key components. This collective statement, derived from experts involved in mpRCTs, outlines considerations for designing and executing such trials.

Waste three-way catalysts (TWCs) and waste LiCoO batteries represent critical environmental challenges due to hazardous components yet contain high-value resources, and their recycling has garnered widespread attention. We propose a novel 'waste-to-waste' synergistic recycling where spent LiCoO batteries reconstruct mineral phases of waste TWCs, enabling co-recovery of platinum group metals and Li/Co without traditional oxidants. However, the environmental performance of this process still requires further analysis.

The transition to a net-zero carbon economy hinges on the development of sustainable, efficient, and economically viable energy technologies. Here, we present a green, electricity-free auto-combustion synthesis of a multifunctional FeNi@MnO@C electrocatalyst, demonstrating outstanding performance for OER, HER, OWS, UOR, UOS, and OWS in alkaline seawater with a required potential of 1.45, 0.

Long-Lived Charge-Transfer State and Interfacial Lock in Double-Cable Conjugated Polymers Enable Efficient and Stable Organic Solar Cells.

The donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) critically govern exciton dissociation and molecular diffusion, determining both efficiency and stability. Herein, we design a double-cable conjugated polymer, SC-1F, to insert into a physically-blended D/A system to optimize the interface. We have found that SC-1F spontaneously segregates to the interface through favorable miscibility and heterogeneous nucleation with the acceptor.
