Article Abstract
Shelters for abused women have expanded from "safe havens" to providing a range of residential and outreach services, and face increasing pressure to demonstrate "value for money" by providing evaluation metrics that may or may not reflect what they actually do. We conducted interviews and surveys with 68 shelter directors in Ontario, Canada, and found that differences in service philosophy and how abuse is defined influence decisions about who receives services and the shelter's role in the broader community; these in turn affect how the work of shelters is positioned. Implications for shelter service evaluation are discussed.

The City of Boston established seven low- threshold shelters (LTS) between 2022- 2023 to address unsheltered homelessness, which disproportionately affects racially and ethnically marginalized groups. Guided by Housing First and harm reduction principles, these shelters provide immediate support for individuals experiencing homelessness and substance use disorder. Semi- structured qualitative interviews with 23 guests self- identified as belonging to racially and ethnically marginalized groups and focus groups with 35 LTS staff revealed barriers to housing stability rooted in structural racism, such as stigma, discrimination, and criminal- legal system involvement.

Importance: Initiating buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD) in outpatient settings has become more difficult for individuals using fentanyl. Novel buprenorphine starting strategies are needed, especially for people experiencing homelessness.
Objective: To evaluate the short-term outcomes of the implementation of an injectable-only overlapping buprenorphine starting protocol in a low-threshold clinic and field-based setting serving individuals with OUD and active fentanyl use.

The family stress model has illuminated pathways from economic hardship to parents' psychological distress to impaired caregiving. However, there is less family stress model research examining other risk processes that link parental stressors to parenting or resilience processes that counteract these pathways. This study examined parents' developmentally appropriate attributions (DAAs) of young children's behavior as a link between multiple dimensions of parental adversity and stress, and multiple parenting indicators.

The 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake forced many residents to evacuate to Special Needs Shelters (SNS)-facilities designed to accept individuals requiring special consideration, such as older adults and those with sensory disabilities. This case report describes a woman in her 90s with untreated cataracts and hearing loss, who was neglected and abused by her son. After evacuation, she was diagnosed with cataracts at the shelter and referred for surgery, significantly improving her vision and her ability to undertake activities of daily living.
