Article Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate the fine structural tuning of metal-metal oxide heterostructure with regards to the individual tuning of the various core and shell components from shell thickness to metal core constitution. Furthermore, we deliberately engineered spatially confined and clustered Au nanoparticles in the core of a porous shell structure without the assistance of template or linker. Our findings unambiguously highlight that whilst it is important to incorporate metal nanoparticles into metal oxide for higher photocatalytic performance through enhanced light absorption and charge separation, the "whereabout" and clustering of Au nanoparticles affect the photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, we also prove the enhanced and prolonged catalytic activity of spatially confined metal cores over conventional surface loaded metal particles, which originates from the structural stability and optimized contact interface for heterojunction-induced charge transfer. The present well-controlled synthetic route can offer a facile and valuable way to tune and probe specific structure in relation to nanoscale light-matter manipulation and solar-to-chemical energy conversion studies.

Rational Design and Applications of Ultrasmall Gold Nanoparticles.

Controlling the size of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been critical in diagnostics, biomolecular sensing, targeted therapy, wastewater treatment, catalysis, and sensing applications. Ultrasmall AuNPs (uAuNPs), with sizes Ranging from 2 to 5 nm, and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), with sizes less than 2 nm, are often dealt with interchangeably in the literature, making it challenging to review them separately. Although they are grouped in our discussion, their chemical and physical properties differ significantly, partly due to their electronic properties.

Conventional acid-catalyzed acetalization faces significant challenges in catalyst recovery and poses environmental concerns. Herein, we develop a CeO-supported Pd single-atom catalyst (Pd/CeO) that eliminates the reliance on liquid acids by creating a localized H-rich microenvironment through heterolytic H activation. X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses confirm the atomic dispersion of Pd via Pd-O-Ce coordination, while density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) that facilitate electron transfer from CeO oxygen to Pd, downshifting the Pd d-band center and optimizing H activation.

Sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) has been well-established as a unique spectroscopic probe to interrogate the structure, interaction, and dynamics of molecular interfaces, with sub-monolayer sensitivity and broad applications. Sub-1 cm-1 High-Resolution Broadband SFG-VS (HR-BB-SFG-VS) has shown advantages with high spectral resolution and accurate spectral line shape. However, due to the lower peak intensity for the long picosecond pulse used in achieving sub-wavenumber resolution in the HR-BB-SFG-VS measurement, only molecular interfaces with relatively strong signal have been studied.

Unlabelled: The queen snapper ( Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1828) is a deep-sea snapper whose commercial importance continues to increase in the US Caribbean. However, little is known about the biology and ecology of this species. In this study, the presence of a fine-scale population structure and genetic diversity of queen snapper from Puerto Rico was assessed through 16,188 SNPs derived from the Restriction site Associated DNA Sequencing (RAD-Seq) technique.
