Article Abstract

Blocking of a charged pore by an oppositely charged nanoparticle can support rectifying properties in a cylindrical nanopore, as opposed to the usual case of a fixed asymmetry in the pore geometry and charge distribution. We present here experimental data and model calculations to confirm this fundamental effect. The nanostructure imaging and the effects of nanoparticle concentration, pore radius, and salt concentration on the electrical conductance-voltage (G-V) curves are discussed. Logic responses based on chemical and electrical inputs/outputs could also be implemented with a single pore acting as an effective nanofluidic diode. To better show the generality of the results, different charge states and relative sizes of the nanopore and the nanoparticle are considered, emphasizing those physical concepts that are also found in the ionic drug blocking of protein ion channels.

Regulating enol-keto tautomerism at the single-molecule level with a confined optical field.

The keto-enol tautomerism, involving a reversible isomerization of the molecule, plays a critical role in organic synthesis, biological activity, and molecular-scale charge transport. It is therefore essential to manipulate the process of keto-enol tautomerism. Unlike typical ketones, β-diketones exist dominantly in the enol form and it is a great challenge to realize enol-keto tautomerism due to the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the enol form.

Composite Behavior of Nanopore Array Large Memristors.

Micromachines (Basel)

Holcombe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Clemson University, Clemson, SC 29634, USA.

Synthetic nanopores were recently demonstrated with memristive and nonlinear voltage-current behaviors, akin to ion channels in a cell membrane. Such ionic devices are considered a promising candidate for the development of brain-inspired neuromorphic computing techniques. In this work, we show the composite behavior of nanopore-array large memristors, formed with different membrane materials, pore sizes, electrolytes, and device arrangements.

Weyl metals, known for their topological structure and chiral anomaly, exhibit nonlinear transport that defies conventional theory. In this study, ZrTe, an inversion-symmetric Dirac semimetal tunable to a Weyl state by magnetic field, is investigated, and rectification (alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) conversion) and third harmonic generation in longitudinal configurations is revealed. Despite its bulk inversion symmetry, symmetry-forbidden rectification and a dynamic phase transition arising from the chiral anomaly are observed.

The recently predicted mechanism of orbital pumping can enable the generation of pure orbital current from a precessing ferromagnet (FM) without the need for electrical current injection. This orbital current can be efficiently injected into an adjacent nonmagnetic material (NM) without being hampered by electrical conductivity mismatch. However, experimentally identifying this novel effect presents significant challenges due to the substantial background contributions from spin pumping and spin rectification effects (SREs).
