Biocatalytic membrane reactors have been widely used in different industries including food, fine chemicals, biological, biomedical, pharmaceuticals, environmental treatment and so on. This article gives an overview of the different immobilized enzymatic processes and their advantages over the conventional chemical catalysts. The application of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) reduces the energy consumption, and system size, in line with process intensification. The performances of MBR are considerably influenced by substrate concentration, immobilized matrix material, types of immobilization and the type of reactor. Advantages of a membrane associated bioreactor over a free-enzyme biochemical reaction, and a packed bed reactor are, large surface area of immobilization matrix, reuse of enzymes, better product recovery along with heterogeneous reactions, and continuous operation of the reactor. The present research work highlights immobilization techniques, reactor setup, enzyme stability under immobilized conditions, the hydrodynamics of MBR, and its application, particularly, in the field of sugar, starch, drinks, milk, pharmaceutical industries and energy generation.

Silk fibroin (SF)-based flexible electronic/photonic materials have gained great attention in wearable devices and soft sensors. However, it remains challenging to understand the molecular interaction mechanisms and subsequently fabricate SF-based flexible materials that exhibit fluorescence, humidity sensitivity, and conductivity properties. In this study, by incorporating lanthanide europium ion (Eu), the design and fabrication of a flexible, fluorescent, and conductive SF membrane was proposed.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is an autologous matrix rich in platelets, leukocytes, and growth factors that support tissue regeneration. Enhancing its structural and biological properties through biomaterial supplementation may improve clinical outcomes. This study evaluated the effects of adding hyaluronic acid (HA) and collagen to PRF on growth factor release and mechanical strength.

Pentameric ligand-gated ion channels control synaptic neurotransmission via an allosteric mechanism, whereby agonist binding induces global protein conformational changes that open an ion-conducting pore. For the proton-activated bacterial () ligand-gated ion channel (GLIC), high-resolution structures are available in multiple conformational states. We used a library of atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study conformational changes and to perform dynamic network analysis to elucidate the communication pathways underlying the gating process.

PurposeTo summarize the currently available evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) cannulation performed by intensivists.MethodsWe conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for studies of any design in which patients underwent ECMO cannulation by intensivists. The search was updated on Dec 15, 2024.

Merocyanine photoacids (MCHs) have found applications in chemical, material, energy, and biomedical areas, and are currently being investigated for industrial applications. Hydrolysis, relatively high dark acidity, and moderate solubility in water are the major concerns for their practical applications. Inspired by the structure of the cell membrane, we incorporated the most commonly used MCH into sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles.
