Article Abstract

Receptor-subtype selectivity is an important issue in medicinal chemistry and can become very difficult to achieve if the actual binding pockets of the respective receptors are highly conserved. For such cases, known unselective ligands could be equipped with a spacer that sticks outside the actual orthosteric binding pocket towards the extracellular loops. The end of the spacer bears certain functional groups to enable specific or unspecific interactions with the receptor residues outside the binding cavity. Our experiments indicated that it is possible to achieve selectivity within the dopamine D1 family with such 'loop-hooks'.

Siderophore production is a key fitness trait for bacteria, particularly in iron-limited environments such as marine ecosystems and host tissues. In this study, we identify the tenABECDC2D2hp1-4 gene cluster as responsible for siderophore biosynthesis in Tenacibaculum maritimum, confirmed through genome analysis and a tenCD-inactivated mutant. This cluster, highly similar to the desferrioxamine biosynthesis system in Streptomyces coelicolor, features a unique tenCD duplication/fusion, essential for siderophore formation.

The gastroenteropancreatic system in elasmobranchs presents a number of firsts in the evolutionary history of vertebrates. This group of fishes were the first to have evolved an acid-pepsin-secreting stomach and demonstrate a glandular pancreas with exocrine and endocrine cells. The exogenous snakehead retrovirus (SnRV) is an unclassified member of the Orthoretrovirinae subfamily, discovered in cell lines derived from several fish species. SnRV resembles complex lentiviruses and potentially encodes accessory proteins, including the product of the 3' open reading frame (3'ORF).
