The growing availability of data from robotic and laparoscopic surgery has created new opportunities to investigate the modeling and assessment of surgical technical performance and skill. However, previously published methods for modeling and assessment have not proven to scale well to large and diverse data sets. In this paper, we describe a new approach for simultaneous detection of gestures and skill that can be generalized to different surgical tasks. It consists of two parts: (1) descriptive curve coding (DCC), which transforms the surgical tool motion trajectory into a coded string using accumulated Frenet frames, and (2) common string model (CSM), a classification model using a similarity metric computed from longest common string motifs. We apply DCC-CSM method to detect surgical gestures and skill levels in two kinematic datasets (collected from the da Vinci surgical robot). DCC-CSM method classifies gestures and skill with 87.81% and 91.12% accuracy, respectively.

Drawing on cognitive and motivational perspectives, this chapter introduces a dual-pathway model highlighting the importance of parents' cognitive and motivational math parenting practices in fostering children's math learning. Background: This article explores approaches to enriching storybook reading experiences to facilitate mathematics learning in children.
Method: A scoping review of existing literature was conducted to identify approaches for enhancing mathematics storybooks.
Results: Two primary approaches were identified: hands-on physical experiences, such as gestures, enactment, and manipulatives; and technology-driven interventions, such as augmented reality and wearables.

Classical social cognitive conceptions suppose that the existence of common representations between agents constitutes the basis that represents the world from others' perspectives. Alternatively, recent contributions support that the ability to distinguish self- from other's representation would rather be at the origins of social inferences abilities. In the present study we compared the effects of two types of imitation training: mirror imitation (for which gesture could be represented in common referential) and anatomically congruent imitation (which requires not only a representation of the gesture of the model but also distinguishing between one's own and others' representations).
