In vertebrates, the thymus is the main site of T cell development. The thymus reaches its maximum output during adolescence, after which it shrinks and generates fewer and fewer T cells. Physiological age-related involution of the thymus and failure to recover after injury are associated with impaired cellular immunity; hence, there is considerable interest in developing strategies to combat these deficiencies. In this Opinion article, we briefly review the phylogenetic and ontogenetic hallmarks of thymus development and function, and we discuss experimental models of impaired thymopoiesis and the molecular mechanisms of thymopoietic recovery. At each stage of the discussion we highlight the major gaps in our current knowledge.

All participants underwent ultrasonography to quantify thymic and splenic dimensions.

Polyamines (PAs), including spermidine, spermine and their precursor, putrescine, are ubiquitous molecules that are vital for a variety of physiological processes. Recently, PAs gained research attention because of their roles in promoting longevity and preventing age-related diseases. Circulating and tissue levels of PAs appear to decline with age, while higher intake of PAs in humans is correlated with better health during aging.

This retrospective study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a simplified scoring model utilizing contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) in distinguishing low-risk thymomas (LRTs) from thymic cysts in patients with anterior mediastinal hyper-attenuating nodules. A total of 32 patients of LRTs and 40 patients of hyper-attenuating thymic cysts who underwent chest biphasic CECT preoperatively from January 2015 to December 2022 were included. The traditional CT imaging features and clinical features of each patient were analyzed.
