Using magnetic resonance imaging, this study compared hippocampal volume between 145 very preterm children and 34 children born full-term at 7 years of age. The relationship between hippocampal volume and memory and learning impairments at 7 years was also investigated. Manual hippocampal segmentation and subsequent three-dimensional volumetric analysis revealed reduced hippocampal volumes in very preterm children compared with term peers. However, this relationship did not remain after correcting for whole brain volume and neonatal brain abnormality. Contrary to expectations, hippocampal volume in the very preterm cohort was not related to memory and learning outcomes. Further research investigating the effects of very preterm birth on more extensive networks in the brain that support memory and learning in middle childhood is needed.

Background: The hippocampus plays a critical role in psychosis, with reduced volume observed across the psychosis continuum. These structural changes are associated with cognitive deficits, symptom severity, and increased risk of psychosis progression. Elevated hippocampal perfusion and glutamate/GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) imbalance further suggest metabolic dysregulation as a key mechanism.

Introduction: The role of triglycerides in Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) progression remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate how triglyceride levels influence the relationship between amyloid-beta (Aβ) deposition, hippocampal atrophy, and cognitive decline in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early-stage ADD.
Methods: A total 188 older adults (170 with MCI, 18 with early ADD) from the Gwangju Alzheimer's Disease and Related cohort underwent amyloid PET and structural magnetic resonance imaging.

Understanding the cognitive trajectory of a neurological disease can provide important insight on underlying mechanisms and disease progression. Cognitive impairment is now well established as beginning many years before the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, but pre-diagnostic profiles are unclear for other neurological conditions that may be associated with cognitive impairment. We analysed data from the prospective UK Biobank cohort with study baseline assessment performed between 2006 and 2010 and participants followed until 2021.

Perinatal stroke is a vascular injury occurring early in life, often resulting in motor deficits (hemiplegic cerebral palsy/HCP). Comorbidities may also include poor neuropsychological outcomes, such as deficits in memory. Previous studies have used resting state functional MRI (fMRI) to demonstrate that functional connectivity (FC) within hippocampal circuits is associated with memory function in typically developing controls (TDC) and in adults after stroke, but this is unexplored in perinatal stroke.

Alterations in hippocampal structure and function are established in schizophrenia. However, the specific patterns of hippocampal activity along the schizophrenia course remain unknown. Eighty-five study participants [34 schizophrenia probands (SZ), 32 first-degree relatives (REL), 19 healthy controls (HC)] underwent 3Tesla ultra-high resolution brain MRI (Vascular Space Occupancy); relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV)-an index of regional activity-was estimated across hippocampal subfields: dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, CA1, and subiculum (SUB).
