Article Abstract

Studies were conducted into the activities of calcium, magnesium, and sodium-potassium ATPase as well as into crude protein levels in homogenate and cell fractions of brain of two foetuses, aged 111 days, and of two piglets each, aged two days or nine weeks. The average brain-borne crude protein percentages were 6.55 in the foetuses, 7.25 in the two-day piglets, and 9.60 in the nine-week piglets. Calcium, magnesium, and sodium-potassium ATPase activities, related to one gram of fresh brain mass, were found to go up along with growing age. Highest relative percentages of sodium-potassium ATPase were recordable from homogenate and from the mitochondrial and microsomal fractions of the foetuses. Certain quantitative differences were obtained from using calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium ions to stimulate ATPase in the fractions of cell nuclei, mitochondria, and microsomes. The optimum temperature for magnesium and sodium-potassium ATPase in homogenate and in the mitochondrial fraction of brain was 45 degrees C.

This study investigates the roles of strigolactones (SL) and endogenous hydrogen sulfide (HS) in regulating physiological processes in tomato seedlings under NaCl-induced stress. Exposure of the seedlings to 100 mM NaCl stress reduced K content by 21% while increasing Na accumulation by 69%, disrupting the K/Na ratio and impairing H-ATPase activity. However, the application of SL improved H-ATPase activity and K uptake and reduced Na accumulation.

Na,K‑ATPase, commonly referred to as the sodium pump, is known for its essential function as an ion pump, which is key for transporting Na and K across plasma cell membranes. Additionally, Na,K‑ATPase has multiple biological functions, independent of ion pumping, which are involved in regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and other processes associated with the development and progression of various diseases; particularly cancer, cardiovascular diseases, nervous system diseases, kidney diseases and lung diseases. As a potential therapeutic target, Na,K‑ATPase may represent a novel strategy for treating these diseases in the future.

The Na ⁺ /K ⁺ ATPase, commonly known as the Na ⁺ /K⁺ pump, plays a crucial role in colonic sodium and water transport, inducing diarrhea or constipation. Inflammatory bowel disease is often associated with diarrhea and elevated levels of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), suggesting a potential relationship between the pump and S1P. This study investigated the effects of S1P on colonic Na ⁺ /K ⁺ ATPase using Caco-2 cells as a model and the S1P analogue used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, FTY720P.
