Article Abstract

We design an extremely compact photonic crystal waveguide spatial mode converter which converts the fundamental even mode to the higher order odd mode with nearly 100% efficiency. We adapt a previously developed design and optimization process that allows these types of devices to be designed in a matter of minutes. We also present an extremely compact optical diode device and clarify its general properties and its relation to spatial mode converters. Finally, we connect the results here to a general theory on the complexity of optical designs.

Response Modes of Global Vegetation to Extreme Drought.

Glob Chang Biol

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Vegetation Structure, Function and Construction (VegLab), Institute of Ecology, and College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, Beijing, China.

Increasingly frequent extreme droughts pose a serious threat to global vegetation. However, previous studies have not characterized the whole response process of vegetation to drought, and there are uncertainties in their methods and indicators. In this study, we developed a new indicator system and derived the response modes of global vegetation to extreme drought.

Background: Integrated mode proton imaging is a clinically accessible method for proton radiographs (pRads), but its spatial resolution is limited by multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS). As the amplitude of MCS decreases with increasing particle charge, heavier ions such as carbon ions produce radiographs with better resolution (cRads). Improving image resolution of pRads may thus be achieved by transferring individual proton pencil beam images to the equivalent carbon ion data using a trained image translation network.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition associated with altered resting-state brain function. An increased excitation-inhibition ratio is discussed as a pathomechanism but in-vivo evidence of disturbed neurotransmission underlying functional alterations remains scarce. We compare local resting-state brain activity and neurotransmitter co-localizations between autism (N = 405, N = 395) and neurotypical controls (N = 473, N = 474) in two independent cohorts and correlate them with excitation-inhibition changes induced by glutamatergic (ketamine) and GABAergic (midazolam) medication.

Evaluation of mechanical ventilation modes in the laparoscopic perioperative period with electrical impedance tomography.

PLoS One

September 2025

Department of Anesthesiology, Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Child Health, Guangzhou, China.

Purpose: Uncertainty persists regarding the optimal mode of mechanical ventilation for laparoscopic perioperative periods. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an effective tool for monitoring and guiding lung-protective ventilation. This study aimed to compare the effects of pressure-controlled ventilation-volume guaranteed (PCV-VG) and volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) on pulmonary ventilation during laparoscopic surgery.
