A large variety of new energy-generating technologies are being developed in an effort to reduce global dependence on fossil fuels, and to reduce the carbon footprint of energy generation. The term 'biological photovoltaic system' encompasses a broad range of technologies which all employ biological material that can harness light energy to split water, and then transfer the resulting electrons to an anode for power generation or electrosynthesis. The use of whole cyanobacterial cells is a good compromise between the requirements of the biological material to be simply organized and transfer electrons efficiently to the anode, and also to be robust and able to self-assemble and self-repair. The principle that photosynthetic bacteria can generate and transfer electrons directly or indirectly to an anode has been demonstrated by a number of groups, although the power output obtained from these devices is too low for biological photovoltaic devices to be useful outside the laboratory. Understanding how photosynthetically generated electrons are transferred through and out of the organism is key to improving power output, and investigations on this aspect of the technology are the main focus of the present review.

Aims: Skeletal muscle energetic augmentation might be a mechanism via which intravenous iron improves symptoms in heart failure, but no direct measurement of intrinsic mitochondrial function has been performed to support this notion. This molecular substudy of the FERRIC-HF II trial tested the hypothesis that ferric derisomaltose (FDI) would improve electron transport chain activity, given its high dependence on iron-sulfur clusters which facilitate electron transfer during oxidative phosphorylation.
Methods And Results: Vastus lateralis skeletal muscle biopsies were taken before and 2 weeks after randomization.

Electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonia is a sustainable, cost-effective alternative method for producing renewable electricity and can operate under milder conditions than the traditional Haber-Bosch method. We report direct laser-induced synthesis of copper nanocatalysts embedded in graphitic films for the synthesis of ammonia. Laser-induced metal-embedded graphene (m-LIG) offers many advantages, such as fast and simple synthesis, shape design of the electrodes, and direct printing on any substrate, including thermally sensitive plastics.

Reaction of [Mn(salophen)Cl] {salophen = -phenylenediamine bis(salicylidenaminato)} with a tricyano Fe(III) precursor complex, [Fe(bbp)(CN)] {Hbbp = bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine}, affords a dinuclear cyano-bridged heterometallic Mn-(μ-NC)-Fe fragment in the complex salt [Mn(salophen)(HO)][Mn(salophen)(HO)(μ-NC)Fe(bbp)(CN)]·4HO (1). The title compound shows field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization below 2.8 K.

Radical coupling reactions have been widely used in the synthesis of complex organic molecules, materials science, and drug research. However, restricted conditions or special catalysts are required to overcome the energy barrier and trigger the coupling reaction efficiently. In this study, we provide experimental evidence that the C─N radical coupling reactions can be significantly accelerated by an oriented external electric field (OEEF) under synchronous UV irradiation without a catalyst.
