Background: The purpose of the present study was to compare side-by-side the therapeutic efficacy of a 6-day infusion of carboplatin, followed by X-irradiation with either 6 MV photons or synchrotron X-rays, tuned above the K-edge of Pt, for treatment of F98 glioma bearing rats.
Methods: Carboplatin was administered intracerebrally (i.c.) to F98 glioma bearing rats over 6 days using AlzetTM osmotic pumps starting 7 days after tumor implantation. Radiotherapy was delivered in a single 15 Gy fraction on day 14 using a conventional 6 MV linear accelerator (LINAC) or 78.8 keV synchrotron X-rays.
Results: Untreated control animals had a median survival time (MeST) of 33 days. Animals that received either carboplatin alone or irradiation alone with either 78.8 keV or 6 MV had a MeSTs 38 and 33 days, respectively. Animals that received carboplatin in combination with X-irradiation had a MeST of > 180 days with a 55% cure rate, irrespective of whether they were irradiated with either 78.8 KeV synchrotron X-rays or 6MV photons.
Conclusions: These studies have conclusively demonstrated the equivalency of i.c. delivery of carboplatin in combination with X-irradiation with either 6 MV photons or synchrotron X-rays.

Nano-laminography combines the penetrating power of hard X-rays with a tilted rotational geometry to deliver high-resolution, three-dimensional images of laterally extended, flat specimens that are otherwise incompatible with, or difficult to image using, conventional nano-tomography. In this work, we demonstrate a full-field, X-ray nano-laminography system implemented with the transmission X-ray microscope at beamline 32-ID of the upgraded Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, USA. By rotating the sample around an axis inclined by 20° to the incident beam, the technique minimizes the long optical path lengths that would otherwise generate excessive artifacts when planar samples are imaged edge-on.

Scintillating nanoparticles, or nanoscintillators, are a promising class of radiotherapeutic agents that present novel opportunities to enhance the efficacy and precision of conventional radiation therapy in cancer treatment. These nanoparticles possess the unique ability to convert ionizing radiation, such as X-rays, into visible light emission, which can, in turn, activate a variety of secondary therapeutic modalities, such as photodynamic therapy, within the tumor microenvironment. By enabling therapeutic mechanisms that are mechanistically distinct from those of ionizing radiation, nanoscintillators offer a multifaceted strategy to overcome tumor resistance and improve treatment outcomes.

Ferrimagnets (FiMs), particularly compensated FiMs, composing of coupled sublattices with antiparallel and inequivalent magnetic moments, present a unique material platform for the regulation of magnetism, which is highly desirable for the design of next-generation spin-based devices. Nevertheless, highly efficient methods for controlling its ferromagnetism remains significantly limited owning to the epitaxial growth required for producing high quality and fully featured films. This study, demonstrates the multiple tunability of ferrimagnetism in the rare-earth iron garnets (REIG: thulium iron garnet) film by incorpoating the graphene interlayers.

The resolution of a measurement system is fundamentally constrained by the wavelength of the used wave packet and the numerical aperture of the optical system. Overcoming these limits requires advanced interferometric techniques exploiting quantum correlations. While quantum interferometry can surpass the Heisenberg limit, it has been confined to the optical domain.
