To understand the causes of schizophrenia, a search for stable markers (endophenotypes) is ongoing. In previous years, we have shown that the shine-through visual backward masking paradigm meets the most important characteristics of an endophenotype. Here, we tested masking performance differences between healthy students with low and high schizotypy scores as determined by the self-report O-Life questionnaire assessing schizotypy along three dimensions, i.e. positive schizotypy (unusual experiences), cognitive disorganisation, and negative schizotypy (introvertive anhedonia). Forty participants performed the shine-through backward masking task and a classical cognitive test, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST). We found that visual backward masking was impaired for students scoring high as compared to low on the cognitive disorganisation dimension, whereas the positive and negative schizotypy dimensions showed no link to masking performance. We also found group differences for students scoring high and low on the cognitive disorganisation factor for the WCST. These findings indicate that the shine-through paradigm is sensitive to differences in schizotypy which are closely linked with the pathological expression in schizophrenia.

Background: Patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) suffer from impaired cognitive functions. Previous studies in healthy individuals have shown that a single bout of physical exercise benefits cognitive functions. Such enhancements in cognitive function would be highly beneficial, particularly for patients with SSD, as cognitive abilities play a vital role in both mental and physical health.

Background: Youth is a critical period for brain development, yet first-episode schizophrenia (FES) during this stage remains understudied, particularly concerning the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in schizophrenia-related psychopathology and cognitive dysfunction.
Methods: This study enrolled 32 youth (ages 12-24) with FES and 35 age-/sex-matched healthy controls. Serum VEGF levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Early detection of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons, is essential for timely intervention, which can improve patients' quality of life and slow down disease progression. Traditional diagnostic methods rely heavily on clinical tests, which can be infrequent and may not capture slight behavioral changes that indicate early cognitive or motor decline. This work presents a novel approach using smart home data to detect early signs of neurodegeneration through continuous monitoring of sleep patterns and daily activity routines.

The glymphatic system is integral to the elimination of metabolic waste from the central nervous system and has been extensively studied in relation to neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that glymphatic dysfunction may also play a role in psychiatric disorders, including psychosis and schizophrenia. Cuproptosis, a newly identified form of copper-dependent regulated cell death, plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. However, whether cuproptosis is involved in lead (Pb)-induced cognitive impairment and its underlying mechanisms remains unclear. Herein, using Pb-exposed rat models and HT22 neuronal cell models, we found that Pb exposure led to dose-dependent increases in copper levels in both hippocampus tissue and blood.
