Background: Small dense low-density lipoprotein (sd-LDL) is an atherogenic LDL subfraction and often increased in metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to determine whether sd-LDL cholesterol (sd-LDL-C) is a therapeutic marker of statin treatment in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and MetS.
Methods: We examined 71 patients with ACS and 50 non-ACS subjects with normal coronary arteries (controls). The patients with ACS were treated with life-style modifications (n=36) or those plus 20mg atorvastatin daily (n=35) for 6 months. We measured sd-LDL-C by a novel detergent-based homogenous assay and calculated buoyant LDL-C (b-LDL-C).
Results: The patients with ACS had higher sd-LDL-C than did the controls (30±14 vs. 22±8 mg/dl, p<0.001). Furthermore, sd-LDL-C was higher in the patients with ACS and MetS (n=31) than in those without MetS (n=40) (35±17 vs. 27±11 mg/dl, p<0.05). Atorvastatin reduced LDL-C and sd-LDL-C by 31% (102±23 to 70±28 mg/dl, p<0.0001) and 24% (29±15 to 22±13 mg/dl, p<0.01). The reduction in sd-LDL-C by atorvastatin was 5.5-fold greater in the patients with ACS and MetS than in those without MetS (p<0.001). Contrary, that in b-LDL-C was similar between the groups.
Conclusions: sd-LDL-C is a superior therapeutic marker of statin treatment in patients with ACS and MetS.

Background Medication adherence is mostly influenced by cost, and disease management can be achieved through cost-effective combinations. The present study aimed to evaluate adherence to the cost-effective fixed dose combination (FDC) of rosuvastatin and clopidogrel in the management of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Methods This retrospective, non-randomized, non-comparative, multicenter study was conducted across 100 healthcare centers in India.

Point-of-Care (PoC) diagnostics are transforming healthcare by enabling rapid and accessible disease detection right at the patient's bedside. This comprehensive review examines recent advances in nucleic acid (NA)-based PoC testing, revealing how these technologies are revolutionizing molecular diagnostics. Here, we critically analyze the three key components of NA-based PoC development: (i) probe design strategies, (ii) immobilization techniques, and (iii) detection methodologies.

Air pollution is a critical threat to human health and the quality of life in large cities. In this work, we electrically characterized indoor air quality in Dhaka City with a microcontroller-based advanced sensing system in the presence of 60 air purifiers. We conducted LabVIEW-controlled, fully automated, and remotely operated experiments to precisely monitor, store, and analyze the air-purifying effects in the concentrations of air quality index (AQI) parametersPM2.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders characterized by continuous loss of functional neurons. The numbers of AD and PD patients will likely double by 2060 and 2040, reaching 13.9 and 1.

() is one of the bacterial species capable of forming multilayered biofilms on implants. Such biofilms formed on implanted medical devices often require the removal of the implant in order to avoid sepsis or, in the worst case, even the death of the patient. To address the problem of unwanted biofilm formation, its first step, i.
