Article Abstract

Glaucoma is a common cause of visual impairment and irreversible blindness. Medication is important in the management of glaucoma, especially in primary open-angle glaucoma. Combination drug therapy is needed because single drug therapy can not always control the intraocular pressure effectively to a safe level in glaucoma patients with higher baseline intraocular pressure. Traditional unfixed combination therapy of glaucoma may disturb daily life because the frequency of admitting eye-drops is increased, it is less persistence or compliance, and results in the increase of local concentration of preservatives in the eye. The new fixed combination formulations for glaucoma have been developed to be safer, more effect and more compliable. This article reviews the comparative studies of therapeutic effects of anti-glaucoma fixed combination formulation and summarizes features of each formulation, and then prospects the new developing tendency of anti-glaucoma medication.

Objective: To assess the simultaneity of risk behaviors for chronic non-communicable diseases and their association with individual and contextual characteristics in Brazilian adolescents.

Methods: Cross-sectional study using data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. The simultaneity of factors of the consumption of ultra-processed foods, level of physical activity, smoking and alcohol use was analyzed, according to individual and contextual characteristics, estimating the odds ratios (OR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for fixed effects and variance and 95%CI for random effects, through multilevel polytomous logistic regression.

Efficient production of sodium Bose-Einstein condensates in a hybrid trap.

We describe an apparatus that efficiently produces 23Na Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a hybrid trap that combines a quadrupole magnetic field with a far-detuned optical dipole trap. Using a Bayesian optimization framework, we systematically optimize all BEC production parameters in modest-sized batches of highly correlated parameters. Furthermore, we introduce a Lagrange multiplier-based technique to optimize the duration of different evaporation stages constrained to have a fixed total duration; this enables the progressive creation of increasingly rapid experimental sequences that still generate high-quality BECs.

Aim    Search for subclinical manifestations of cardiotoxicity in cancer patients at high and very high risk of cardiotoxicity and evaluation of the effectiveness of drug primary prevention during the antitumor treatment. Material and methods    The study included 150 cancer patients with a high and very high Mayo Clinic (USA) Cardiotoxicity Risk Score. The main group consisted of 84 patients at high and very high risk of cardiotoxicity who were prescribed cardioprotective therapy, including a fixed combination of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) perindopril and the beta-blocker bisoprolol with trimetazidine.

Pathway-based genetic association analysis for overdispersed count data.

J Appl Stat

February 2025

Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, USA.

Overdispersion is a common phenomenon in genetic data, such as gene expression count data. In genetic association studies, it is important to investigate the association between a gene expression and a set of genetic variants from a pathway. However, existing approaches for pathway analysis are primarily designed for continuous and binary outcomes and are not applicable to overdispersed count data.

Motivation: Heavy usage of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers to satisfy the increasing demands for food has led to severe environmental impacts like decreasing crop yields and eutrophication. One promising alternative is using nitrogen-fixing microorganisms as biofertilizers, which use the nitrogenase enzyme. This could also be achieved by expressing a functional nitrogenase enzyme in the cells of the cereal crops.
