A wearable cardiopulmonary monitoring system, a LifeShirt, was used to acquire continuous electrocardiograms (ECGs) from ambulatory swine. The animals received intracoronary injections of autologous mesenchymal stem cells, and the LifeShirt was used for long-duration ECG monitoring in pre-defined periods post cell infusion. The system used here was developed for measurements from non-human primates and canines; however, we demonstrated that it could be used to non-invasively measure ECGs from swine without creating undue stress or restricting movement. A MATLAB-based analysis algorithm was developed to automatically detect premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) that arose 8-10 hours after cell delivery with spontaneous resolution 2-3 days post-infusion. Template based cross-correlation was used to detect the PVCs and identify regions of consecutive ventricular rhythm. The final algorithm was highly specific and sensitive when tested on records from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The algorithm was subsequently used to automatically identify and quantify PVCs from over 200 hours of ECG data obtained from nine ambulatory swine.

Iron is an important trace element whose deficiency is associated with anemia, which is a common condition in South American camelids. However, there are only few data available on the physiologic relationships between serum iron and hematologic findings in alpacas. In 81 laboratory diagnostic datasets from 21 clinically healthy alpacas collected over a nine-year period, we recently reported significant positive correlations between iron and hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and eosinophils, and significant negative correlations between iron and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), platelets, and neutrophils.

Background: Congenital melanocytic neoplasia is a rare disease that is described for the pig breeds Duroc, Iberico and Nero Siciliano used in agriculture. The hereditary nature of this neoplastic condition has been substantiated. The clinical course is unpredictable, spanning from complete spontaneous regression of primary tumors and survival of afflicted animals to a fatal progression marked by metastases to internal organs.

Objective: To assess mitochondrial transplantation (MitoTx) via portal vein infusion to reduce liver ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R) in a survival porcine model.
Summary Background Data: MitoTx has been shown to alleviate I/R injury in various organs.
Methods: Male Yorkshire pigs (38±1 kg) were subjected to 2 hours of ischemia in the left hemi-liver (left portal-triad clamping), and at the beginning of reperfusion (marked as t=0 h), animals received a 1-hour infusion of autologous mitochondria (MT, 7×10^9/kg) or saline (controls) via the portal vein.

This study investigates lorazepam-loaded dissolving microneedles (LMNs) as a fast-acting and minimally invasive treatment for status epilepticus. The LMNs were developed using a micro-moulding technique with an optimised combination of PVP K30, Dextran 40 and Pullulan. Their stability was confirmed through Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.
