Article Abstract

Cardiotoxicity associated with ecstasy has been reported in recent years but is very rare. We described 2 lethal cases associated with Ecstasy use. One whole tablet of ecstasy in one case and a half-tablet ecstasy in another case led to lethal effect, but death was not simply attributed to a lethal intoxication. Severe myocardial contraction band necrosis was observed in these 2 cases as revealed by the histopathologic examination. Focal interstitial infiltration of lymphocyte and monocyte around myocardial lesions in case one was also found. The results suggest that contraction band necrosis could be induced by ecstasy and is a potential lethal lesion in some cases.

Neuromuscular control of a five-finger pinch task is influenced by training history.

Hand control for dexterous and strength-based tasks involves several levels of the neuromuscular system which interact to produce force. We investigated hand force, motor unit (MU) control, and intermuscular coherence in specialist-trained groups to identify how training may affect neuromuscular force control and motor neuron activity. Equal groups of ten strength-trained (rock climbers) and dexterity-trained (musicians) individuals participated.

Previous evidence suggests that shared synaptic inputs across spinal motor neurons play a key role in coordinating multiple muscles during hand movements, reducing control complexity. In this study, we investigated how the nervous system modulates these common synaptic inputs during a functionally relevant grip (grasping) compared to less functionally relevant hand tasks. Seventeen participants performed three different tasks: simultaneous four-finger flexion without thumb involvement (four-finger flexion), thumb flexion, and simultaneous flexion of both fingers and thumb (grasping).

Advanced three-dimensional surgical planning of complex ventricular anatomy in transposition of the great arteries.

This is a case of a 6-week-old male with D-TGA and multiple large ventricular septal defects who presented with oxygen desaturations into the 60s. He had initially undergone palliative pulmonary artery banding at a different institution, for concern that patch closure of his large ventricular septal defect would compromise ventricular function. We decided to undergo 3D printing and 4D modelling of his heart to delineate his ventricular septal defect anatomy in preparation for their closure and arterial switch operation.

Dual-Functional GeSe-Se Coselenization Enabling Synergistic Defect-Interface Engineering for High-Efficiency Electrodeposited Flexible CZTSe Solar Cells.

Flexible CuZnSnSe (CZTSe) solar cells hold great potential for low-cost green fabrication and portable applications, yet electrodeposited devices suffer from low efficiency (∼6% vs 12.84% for solution-processed ones), primarily due to defect-induced nonradiative recombination and carrier loss at back interfaces. Herein, a dual-functional GeSe-Se coselenization strategy is proposed to simultaneously achieve defect regulation and back-interface engineering.

From subthalamic local field potentials to the selection of chronic deep brain stimulation contacts in Parkinson's disease - A systematic review.

Background: Programming deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus for optimal symptom control in Parkinson's Disease (PD) requires time and trained personnel. Novel implantable neurostimulators allow local field potentials (LFP) recording, which could be used to identify the optimal (chronic) stimulation contact. However, literature is inconclusive on which LFP features and prediction techniques are most effective.
