Impaired heart rate response to exercise is associated with adverse clinical outcomes in healthy adults and those with established coronary artery disease. It is unclear whether this association persists in subjects who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). In this study, 920 subjects enrolled in the Post CABG trial who had undergone CABG with patent saphenous vein grafts at baseline and known to have discontinued beta blockers before exercise were studied. A maximal symptom-limited exercise treadmill test was performed on study entry. Chronotropic variables were measured at peak exercise. Participants were followed for a composite end point of death, myocardial infarction, stroke, or revascularization. Quantitative coronary angiography was performed at follow-up and compared with baseline angiography, with prespecified angiographic end points of the substantial progression of graft disease and complete occlusion. In multivariate analysis, a low chronotropic index was strongly associated with an increased risk for the composite clinical end point (p for trend = 0.04) and angiographic complete occlusion (p for trend = 0.007) but only weakly associated with angiographic substantial progression (p for trend = 0.07). In conclusion, impaired chronotropic response to exercise identifies subjects at risk for clinical outcomes and graft occlusion, even after revascularization with CABG.

Many different microswimmers propel themselves using flagella that beat periodically. The shape of the flagellar beat and swimming speed have been observed to change with fluid rheology. We quantify changes in the flagellar waveforms of in response to changes in fluid viscosity using (i) shape mode analysis and (ii) a full swimmer simulation to analyse how shape changes affect the swimming speed and to explore the dimensionality of the shape space.

Background: Cancer promotes muscle wasting through an imbalance in the tightly regulated protein synthesis and degradation processes. An array of intracellular signalling pathways, including mTORC1 and AMPK, regulate protein synthesis, and these pathways are responsive to the muscle's microenvironment and systemic stimuli. Although feeding and fasting are established systemic regulators of muscle mTORC1 and protein synthesis, the cancer environment's impact on these responses during cachexia development is poorly understood.

Objectives: To explore differences in beliefs towards running in adults with and without chronic low back pain.
Design: This convergent mixed methods cross-sectional study compared adults with chronic low back pain (n = 39) to pain-free adults with a history of chronic low back pain (n = 28) and a low back pain naive control group (n = 71).
Methods: Beliefs towards running (activity specific beliefs questionnaire; range: 1-4 points), pain intensity (101-point visual analogue scale), disability (Oswestry Disability Index), and habitual physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) were analysed.

Background: The mechanisms contributing to epidural-related maternal hyperthermia remain unclear.
