Article Abstract

A couple of analogues of azobenzenyl beta-cyclodextrins 1 and 2 with self-locked and self-unlocked conformations have been synthesized via the Huisgen cycloaddition from the same reactants, but in distinct reaction conditions (i.e., the hydrothermal synthesis and the "click" reaction, respectively), their conformations were sufficiently proved by X-ray crystal structural analysis, molecular modeling study, and 2D NMR spectroscopy, and their self-assembly behaviors in aqueous solution were also investigated by NMR spectroscopy. Interestingly, the self-locked conformer 1, which could be regarded as a new type of [1]rotaxane, self-assembled to a novel bimolecular capsule, where its azobenzene substituent was included in both its own cavity and the counterpart's cavity, in aqueous solution and in the solid state. In contrast, by adjusting the conformation of 1 to a self-unlocked one, the resulting conformer 2 was found to self-assemble to a linear supramolecule. These studies have shown the stronger impact of the reaction condition changing in cyclodextrin's modification products and will provide a new access to control the structure of supramolecular assemblies by tuning the conformation of building blocks.

Programmable self-assembly has recently enabled the creation of complex structures through precise control of the interparticle interactions and the particle geometries. Targeting ever more structurally complex, dynamic, and functional assemblies necessitates going beyond the design of the structure itself, to the measurement and control of the local flexibility of the intersubunit connections and its impact on the collective mechanics of the entire assembly. In this study, we demonstrate a method to infer the mechanical properties of multisubunit assemblies using cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and RELION's multi-body refinement.

This study investigates how hydrophobic and hydrophilic modifications at the C-terminus of the base peptide, KFEFEFKFK (KbpK), affect the hydrogel macroscopic properties. By the incorporation of phenylalanine (F, hydrophobic) and lysine (K, hydrophilic) residues, four variants, KbpK-K, KbpK-F, KbpK-KF, and KbpK-FK, were designed and evaluated. pH-concentration phase diagrams and Fourier transform infrared confirmed clear links showing how peptide hydrophobicity and charge influence β-sheet formation and macroscopic phase behavior.

The discovery of new weak supramolecular interactions and supramolecular synthons is essential for directing self-assembly processes with enhanced precision, diversity, and functionality in complex molecular architectures. Here, we report the controlled self-assembly of diverse supramolecular architectures by a new directional bonding approach through the integration of radical-based dynamic covalent chemistry and supramolecular synthons. A novel macrocyclic synthon, , with a linear direction is constructed via radical-based dynamic covalent bonds from the phenothiazine building block substituted with two dicyanomethyl radicals.

Distinctive polymer brushes (PBs) play a crucial role in providing a nonpreferential (neutral) surface for vertical orientation of block copolymers (BCPs). This bottom-up approach effectively aligns the formation of vertical lamellar and cylinder lattice structures from the BCP, which is crucial for nanopatterning and other applications. In conventional BCP self-assembly techniques, random copolymer brushes are commonly employed to achieve substrate neutrality.

In this paper, we investigated the thermal, dynamical, and structural properties, as well as association patterns, in 3-phenyl-1-propanol (3P1Pol) and 3-phenyl-1-propanal (3P1Pal), with special attention paid to the latter compound. Both systems turned out to be good glass formers, differing by 17 K in the glass transition temperature, which indicated a strong change in the self-assembly pattern. This supposition was further confirmed by the analysis of dielectric spectra, where, apart from the α-relaxation, also a unique Debye (D)-mode, being a fingerprint of the self-association, characterized by different dynamical properties (dielectric strength, timescale separation from the α-process), was detected in both samples.
