Anesthetic agents have different effects on hemodynamic and cardiac functional parameters. The influence of these changes on valvular function has not been studied in small animals. For this purpose, 48 male Wistar rats were divided into three equal groups. An echocardiogram was performed under inhaled isoflurane 2% gas (group I) or under intraperitoneal pentobarbital 50 mg/kg (group II) or ketamine/xylazine (group III) 40/8 mg/kg. Aortic regurgitation was only found in group III (80%, p < 0.0001 vs. groups I and II). Pulmonary and mitral regurgitation (PR, MR) were observed in all groups but were more frequent in group III (PR 67%, MR 100%) compared with group I (PR 13%, p = 0.003; MR 44%, p = 0.001 vs. group III) and group II (PR 19%, p = 0.011; MR 25%, p < 0.0001 vs. group III). Moreover, valvular regurgitations in group III (except tricuspid regurgitation) were more severe compared with groups I and II. The findings in group III were the result of increased blood pressure and afterload, left ventricular (LV) dilation and decreased function. Also in group III, the regurgitations diminished over time as the blood pressure decreased and LV function recovered. Isoflurane and pentobarbital had less pronounced effects on valvular function (5 and 10 min after induction, respectively) compared with ketamine/xylazine and, therefore, might be the anesthetics of choice for valvular evaluation in male Wistar rats. In conclusion, anesthesia causes hemodynamic changes that may result in functional valvular regurgitations in normal rats.

Background And Aims: This study aimed to describe Crohn's disease perianal fistulizing lesions in patients undergoing surgery over 60 years to compare clinical presentation, management and outcomes with those observed in younger patients.
Methods: Between January 2012 and December 2022, all patients over 60 years old who underwent a first surgical intervention for anal fistula at two medical centers were included. For each patient included, two younger patients who underwent the same surgical procedure during the same period in the same centers were matched for comparison.

Background: Perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) prior to laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is still under debate due to a lack of high evidence. Thus, the study at hand aimed to find out whether this medication lowers the rate of postoperative complications or not.
Methods: In 2020, a retrospective analysis took place at Helios Hospital Berlin Buch, Germany.

Despite advances in genomic diagnostics, the majority of individuals with rare diseases remain without a confirmed genetic diagnosis. The rapid emergence of advanced omics technologies, such as long-read genome sequencing, optical genome mapping and multiomic profiling, has improved diagnostic yield but also substantially increased analytical and interpretational complexity. Addressing this complexity requires systematic multidisciplinary collaboration, as recently demonstrated by targeted diagnostic workshops.

Background: Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) are a genetically heterogeneous group of conditions, with approximately 40% of cases remaining unresolved after initial genetic testing. This study aimed to assess the impact of a personalised genomic approach integrating whole-exome sequencing (WES) reanalysis, whole-genome sequencing (WGS), customised gene panels and functional assays to improve diagnostic yield in unresolved cases.
Subjects/methods: We retrospectively reviewed a cohort of 597 individuals with IRDs, including 525 probands and 72 affected relatives.

Aims: Young people are consuming less healthy diets such as Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), which is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases, including obesity. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the literature concerning the prevalence and trends of adherence to the (MedDiet) in a young Spanish population (aged 2-24 years) from 2004 to 2023.
Data Synthesis: The present review included observational studies and final assessments of longitudinal studies to assess the prevalence or trend in adherence to the MedDiet using the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for Children and Adolescents (KIDMED) in three categories (low (≤3), medium (4-7), and high (≥8)).
