Article Abstract

An assessment of the effects of the 'Prestige' oil spill on intertidal, macroalgal assemblages was carried out comparing abundance data obtained before and after the spill. Four zones in the North and Northwest coast of Spain were sampled, one of them located at the immediate vicinity of the spill, the zone most heavily oiled. Macroalgal assemblages had similar structure between years. Neither critical decrease in abundance of the dominant macroalgae, nor increase in opportunistic species were found. Some differences in abundance were observed, but they did not show any pattern, being more likely the result of the natural variability of the assemblage. Extensive, but not intense fuel deposition on the shores and a limited use of aggressive cleanup methods are suggested as possible causes for the lack of the effects in these assemblages after the 'Prestige' oil spill.

Improving Sensory Differentiation: Refining the 'Fruitiness' Descriptor in Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Sensory analysis is a fundamental tool in evaluating extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) quality, playing an essential role in both consumer markets and international competitions that recognize and promote high-quality olive oils. Among the key attributes assessed, the fruitiness descriptor-subcategorized as green or ripe-is particularly significant, especially considering that higher green fruitiness is often associated with greater prestige. However, a clear methodological approach to distinguish between green fruitiness and ripe fruitiness perceptions, particularly in their overlapping zone, is still lacking.

Kinetics of Biodiesel Production from Microalgae Using Microbubble Interfacial Technology.

As an alternative to fossil fuels, biodiesel can be a source of clean and environmentally friendly energy source. However, its commercial application is limited by expensive feedstock and the slow nature of the pretreatment step-acid catalysis. The conventional approach to carry out this reaction uses stirred tank reactors.

The Prestige oil-spill (2002) is one of the major marine accidents resulting in contamination of virtually all types of marine habitat along c.900 km of coastline in the North-East Atlantic. Environmental pollution affects parasite populations and communities, both directly and through effects on intermediate and definitive hosts.

The Effect of HS Pressure on the Formation of Multiple Corrosion Products on 316L Stainless Steel Surface.

HS gas when exposed to metal can be responsible for both general and localized corrosion, which depend on several parameters such as HS concentration and the corrosion product layer formed. Therefore, the formation of passive film on 316L steel when exposed to HS environment was investigated using several analysis methods such as FESEM and STEM/EDS analyses, which identified a sulfur species underneath the porous structure of the passive film. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that the first layer of CrO and CrO was dissolved, accelerated by the presence of HS-Cl.

Background: Fuel oil-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) inhalation is associated with accidental marine spills. After the petroleum tanker sank off northern Spain in 2002 and the oil rig catastrophe in 2009, subjects involved in environmental decontamination showed signs of ongoing or residual lung disease up to 5 y after the exposure.

Objectives: We aimed at investigating mechanisms driving persistent respiratory disease by developing an animal model of inhalational exposure to fuel oil-derived VOCs.
