The fabrication of carbon nanostructures by direct writing with a scanning force microscope is described. A conductive atomic force tip is used to collect carbon from a glassy carbon substrate and redeposit it onto a gold thin film under voltage control. The resulting patterns are examined with atomic force microscopy and Auger electron spectrometry. Writing of carbon lines with widths as small as 40 nm is demonstrated.

The well-known technique of microtomy, which is an essential cutting tool, was first developed for light and transmission electron microscope uses, but it is currently also utilized to prepare specimens for atomic force microscopy (AFM), ion microscopy using a focused ion beam (FIB), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Ultramicrotomy can only be used on soft substances and metals that are sufficiently ductile to be cut with a diamond knife. Before being sliced by a microtome, many soft materials must first go through numerous preparatory processes.

In this study, using a set of scanning probe microscopy techniques, we investigate the electronic properties of the domain walls in the layered ferroelectric semiconductor of the transition metal oxide dihalide family, NbOI. Although the uniaxial ferroelectricity of NbOI allows only 180° domain walls, the pristine 2D flakes, where polarization is aligned in-plane, typically exhibit a variety of as-grown domain patterns outlined by the electrically neutral and charged domain walls. The electrically biased probing tip can modify the as-grown domain structures.
