We determined the weight of operatively excised thrombi within abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in 42 patients aged 52 to 92 years (mean 73 +/- 9). The thrombi in the 32 men ranged in weight from 12 to 586 g (mean 162 +/- 135) and in the 10 women, from 12 to 351 g (mean 94 +/- 102). The maximal right-to-left diameter of the AAA by computed tomography immediately preoperatively in the 32 men ranged from 5.0 to 11.0 cm (mean 7.6 +/- 1.7), and in the 10 women from 4.0 to 10.5 cm (mean 6.7 +/- 1.9). The relation of the weight of the intraaneurysmal thrombus to the maximal right-to-left diameter of the AAA preoperatively was highly significant in both men (r = 0.72, p <0.001) and women (r = 0.88, p <0.001). In conclusion, the intraaneurysmal thrombi consisted virtually entirely of fibrin, indicating no evidence of organization.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) cause cerebral abscess and ischemic stroke due to paradoxical emboli, risks that are increasingly recognized. We report the evolving placement of thoracic surgery in multi-disciplinary team management of PAVMs that were sporadic or associated with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. From 1983 to 2006, all patients receiving elective treatment had embolization.

Background: Using alternating orthogonal suture throws with the looped whipstitch technique may allow enhanced suture fixation.
Hypothesis: It was hypothesized that this novel multiplanar, perpendicular looped whipstitch (MP) technique would have improved biomechanical properties compared with the standard looped whipstitch (WS) and Krackow stitch (KS).
Study Design: Controlled laboratory study.

Lung transplants are still limited by the shortage of suitable donor lungs, especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. A heterotopic lung transplant (HLTx), as a flexible surgical procedure, can maximize the potential of donor lungs in an emergency, but its widespread use is hindered by difficulties in anastomosis and paucity of outcome data. We performed a retrospective review of 4 patients, each of whom received an HLTxs over 1 year, including 1 left-to-right single HLTx, 2 right-to-left single HLTxs and 1 lobar HLTx (right upper lobe-to-left).

Background: Papillary fibroelastoma (PFE) are one of the most common primary cardiac neoplasms. They are most commonly found on cardiac valves especially on the left side of the heart and have been associated with an increased risk of embolization. To date, no large studies looked at the clinical significance of right-sided PFE (R-PFE).

Right-to-left (RTL) interatrial shunt (IAS) may complicate select cases of COVID-19 pneumonia. We describe the use of serial imaging to monitor shunt in critically ill patients. A 52-year-old man presented with COVID-19 pneumonia.
