Objective: To test the reliability and validity of two mental workload assessment scales, i.e. subjective workload assessment technique (SWAT) and NASA task load index (NASA-TLX).
Methods: One thousand two hundred and sixty-eight mental workers were sampled from various kinds of occupations, such as scientific research, education, administration and medicine, etc, with randomized cluster sampling. The re-test reliability, split-half reliability, Cronbach's alpha coefficient and correlation coefficients between item score and total score were adopted to test the reliability. The test of validity included structure validity.
Results: The re-test reliability coefficients of these two scales and their items were ranged from 0.516 to 0.753 (P < 0.01), indicating the two scales had good re-test reliability; the split-half reliability of SWAT was 0.645, and its Cronbach's alpha coefficient was more than 0.80, all the correlation coefficients between its items score and total score were more than 0.70; as for NASA-TLX, both the split-half reliability and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were more than 0.80, the correlation coefficients between its items score and total score were all more than 0.60 (P < 0.01) except the item of performance. Both scales had good inner consistency. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the two scales was 0.492 (P < 0.01), implying the results of the two scales had good consistency. Factor analysis showed that the two scales had good structure validity.
Conclusion: Both SWAT and NASA-TLX have good reliability and validity and may be used as a valid tool to assess mental workload in China after being revised properly.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) enables non-invasive modulation of brain activity, holding promise for cognitive research and clinical applications. However, it remains unclear how the spiking activity of cortical neurons is modulated by specific electric field (E-field) distributions. Here, we use a multi-scale computational framework that integrates an anatomically accurate head model with morphologically realistic neuron models to simulate the responses of layer 5 pyramidal cells (L5 PCs) to the E-fields generated by conventional M1-SO tACS.

The Analgesia Nociception Index (ANI) has been used to assess discomfort in anesthetized adults. The COMFORT Behavior Scale (CBS) is recommended for assessing discomfort in intubated and sedated children. The primary objective of the present study was to assess the validity and performance of the ANI as an indicator of discomfort in intubated, ventilated children in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

The development of innovative bioprocessing technologies has resulted from the growing global need for sustainable forms of energy and environmentally friendly waste treatment. In this review, we focus on the combined electro-fermentation and microbial fuel cells, as they form a hybrid system that simultaneously addresses wastewater treatment, bioenergy production, and bioplastics. Even though microbial fuel cells produce electricity out of the organic waste by the use of electroactive microorganisms, electro-fermentation improves the microbial pathways through the external electrochemical management.

A method for the conversion of isoxazoles into thiazoles by skeleton rearrangement has been achieved by an ammonium iodide-catalyzed cycloaddition protocol under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Most appealingly, the reaction can proceed smoothly without the addition of any transition metal catalyst. Detailed mechanistic studies, including control experiments and key reaction intermediate characterization, reveal an intermolecular [3+2] cycloaddition reaction pathway.

We model Auger spectra using second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory combined with complex-scaled basis functions. For this purpose, we decompose the complex MP2 energy of the core-hole state into contributions from specific decay channels and propose a corresponding equation-of-motion (EOM) method for computing the doubly ionized final states of Auger decay. These methods lead to significant savings in computational cost compared to our recently developed approaches based on coupled-cluster theory [F.
