We propose and experimentally demonstrate long-distance remote simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature based on a Raman fiber laser with a single fiber Bragg grating embedded on a quartz plate. A Raman fiber laser output with a high extinction ratio of more than approximately 50 dB is achieved by the fiber grating cavity. In the sensing probe, half of the fiber Bragg grating is fixed steadily on the quartz plate to respond to temperature only, while the other half of the grating is free to respond to both temperature and strain. Based on the proposed scheme, lasing wavelength shift and separation occur with temperature and strain change, respectively. Efficient simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature for long-distance sensing applications of more than 50 km is readily obtained.

This study investigates the HO and CO sorption behavior of two chemically distinct polystyrene-divinylbenzene-based ion exchange sorbents: a primary amine and a permanently charged strong base quaternary ammonium (QA) group with (bi)carbonate counter anions. We compare their distinct interactions with HO and CO through simultaneous thermal gravimetric, calorimetric, gas analysis, and molecular modeling approaches to evaluate their performance for dilute CO separations like direct air capture. Thermal and hybrid (heat + low-temperature hydration) desorption experiments demonstrate that the QA-based sorbent binds both water and CO more strongly than the amine counterparts but undergoes degradation at moderate temperatures, limiting its compatibility with thermal swing regeneration.

Rules can control the listener's behavior, yet few studies have examined variables that quantitatively determine the extent of this control relative to other rules and contingencies. To explore these variables, we employed a novel procedure that required a choice between rules. Participants clicked two buttons on a computer screen to earn points exchangeable for money.

In ultrasound imaging, propagation of an acoustic wavefront through heterogeneous media causes phase aberrations that degrade the coherence of the reflected wavefront, leading to reduced image resolution and contrast. Adaptive imaging techniques attempt to correct this phase aberration and restore coherence, leading to improved focusing of the image. We propose an autofocusing paradigm for aberration correction in ultrasound imaging by fitting an acoustic velocity field to pressure measurements, via optimization of the common midpoint phase error (CMPE), using a straight-ray wave propagation model for beamforming in diffusely scattering media.

Force prediction is crucial for functional rehabilitation of the upper limb. Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals play a pivotal role in muscle force studies, but its non-stationarity challenges the reliability of sEMG-driven models. This problem may be alleviated by fusion with electrical impedance myography (EIM), an active sensing technique incorporating tissue morphology information.

The calibration of the JET x-ray spectrometer is presented. The absolute throughput, diffractor focusing, and instrument function of the spectrometer are presented, and the quality of the ion temperature measurement is re-assessed, particularly at the lower end. The addition of a second diffractor enables the simultaneous measurements of the spectra from H- and He-like nickel, which widens the spatial coverage of the core-ion temperature measurements for high-performance plasmas at a fixed Bragg angle range.
