Betacellulin is a relatively new member of the epidermal growth factor peptide family, however, its function remains poorly defined. We investigated its physiological effects in rats implanted with pumps to deliver vehicle or recombinant rat betacellulin [46 microg/day] for 7 days. At kill, blood and gastrointestinal tissues were collected for determinations of betacellulin levels, proliferation (bromodeoxyuridine-BrdU incorporation) and growth. Plasma betacellulin levels were increased 8-fold compared to vehicle, whilst serum insulin, body weight and food intake were decreased by 32, 15 and 9%, respectively. Water intake, urine and faecal output and small intestinal weight were respectively increased by 36, 78, 47 and 24%. Ileal and proximal colonic crypt depths were increased by 25 and 51% although the BrdU labelling index was unaffected. Betacellulin stimulated gastrointestinal growth, the increased responsiveness of the terminal ileum and colon suggesting therapeutic potential in disease conditions in which ileal or colonic re-growth is desirable. Betacellulin further stimulated a diuresis suggesting an additional role in fluid homeostasis.

Several members of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family have been implicated in the biology of schizophrenia (Ketharanathan et al., 2024). The EGF-related ligand, Betacellulin (BTC), plays an important role in the proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells and our group found markedly reduced BTC levels in patients with schizophrenia.

Islet or β-cell transplantation is currently considered to be the ideal treatment for diabetes, and three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting of a bionic pancreas with physiological stiffness is considered to be promising for the encapsulation and transplantation of β-cells. In this study, a 5%GelMA/2%AlgMA hybrid hydrogel with pancreatic physiological stiffness was constructed and used for β-cell encapsulation, 3D bioprinting, and in vivo transplantation to evaluate glycemic control in diabetic mice. The hybrid hydrogel had good cytocompatibility and could induce insulin-producing cells (IPCs) to form pseudoislet structures and improve insulin secretion.

Prior studies showed that epidermal growth factor (EGF) inhibits vasopressin-stimulated osmotic water permeability in the renal collecting duct. Here, we investigated the underlying mechanism. Using isolated perfused rat inner medullary collecting ducts (IMCDs), we found that the addition of EGF to the peritubular bath significantly decreased 1-deamino-8-d-arginine vasopressin (dDAVP)-stimulated water permeability, confirming prior observations.

Background: The gap junction protein, connexin 43 (Cx43) is highly expressed in human granulosa-lutein (hGL) cells. The phosphorylation of certain amino acid residues in the Cx43 protein has been shown to be related to a decline in gap junction intercellular communication (GJIC), which subsequently affects oocyte meiotic resumption. As a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family, betacellulin (BTC) mediates luteinizing hormone (LH)-induced oocyte maturation and cumulus cell expansion in mammalian follicles.
