Article Abstract

The authors give the solution to the problem of one-dimensional consolidation of double-layered ground with the use of the differential quadrature method. Case studies showed that the computational results for pore-water pressure in soil layer agreed with those of analytical solution; and that in the computational results for the interface of soil layer also agreed with those of the analytical solution except for the small discrepancies during shortly after the start of computation. The advantages of the solution presented in this paper are that compared with the analytical solution, it avoids the cumbersome work in solving the transcendental equation for eigenvalues, and in the case of the Laplace transform solution, it can resolve the precision problem in the numerical solution of long time inverse Laplace transform. Because of the matrix form of the solution in this paper, it is convenient for formulating computational program for engineering practice. The formulas for calculating double-layered ground consolidation may be easily extended to the case of multi-layered soils.

Soliton propagation of laser radiation in various nonlinear media is of great importance because of its numerous applications. Active periodic structures with parity-time symmetry provide the possibility for the solitons generation due to the balance of energy gain and loss. In the present paper, we derive an approximate analytical soliton solution to a model of two-color laser radiation propagation in an active periodic structure.

ClinicSum: Utilizing Language Models for Generating Clinical Summaries from Patient-Doctor Conversations.

Proc IEEE Int Conf Big Data

December 2024

Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, Mississippi State University Potentia Analytics Inc.; Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering, Mississippi State University.

This paper presents ClinicSum, a novel framework designed to automatically generate clinical summaries from patient-doctor conversations. It utilizes a two-module architecture: a retrieval-based filtering module that extracts Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan (SOAP) information from conversation transcripts, and an inference module powered by fine-tuned Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs), which leverage the extracted SOAP data to generate abstracted clinical summaries. To fine-tune the PLM, we created a training dataset of consisting 1,473 conversations-summaries pair by consolidating two publicly available datasets, FigShare and MTS-Dialog, with ground truth summaries validated by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).

Raman-based PAT for multi-attribute monitoring during VLP recovery by dual-stage CFF: attribute-specific spectral preprocessing for model transfer.

Institute of Process Engineering in Life Sciences, Section IV: Biomolecular Separation Engineering, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany.

Spectroscopic soft sensors are developed by combining spectral data with chemometric modeling, and offer as Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tools powerful insights into biopharmaceutical processing. In this study, soft sensors based on Raman spectroscopy and linear or partial least squares (PLS) regression were developed and successfully transferred to a filtration-based recovery step of precipitated virus-like particles (VLPs). For near real-time monitoring of product accumulation and precipitant depletion, the dual-stage cross-flow filtration (CFF) set-up was equipped with an on-line loop in the second membrane stage.

Herein, it is reported the synthesis of a niobium-based metal-organic framework (MOF), [Nb-(Bez-(COO))] , for the extraction of caffeine from surface waters. The material was synthesized and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, which confirmed the coordination between the ligand (1,4-benzenodicarboxylic, (Bez-(COO))) and niobium (Nb) with a morphology composed of hexagonal rods, high crystallinity, and a surface area of 94.7 m g.

Mozzarella is a white, soft, fermented cheese that is often recognized for its stretchability and typically contains approximately 40% total fat (dry basis), a considerable portion of which is saturated fat. Low-fat mozzarella cheese (LFMC) has started to increase in popularity among health-conscious consumers. Unfortunately, the inadequate meltability and rubbery texture of LFMC make it undesirable for many consumers.
