Currently, there is limited understanding of the structures and variabilities of bacterial communities in oil-contaminated soil within shale gas development. The Changning shale gas well site in Sichuan province was focused, and high-throughput sequencing was used to investigate the structures of bacterial communities and functions of bacteria in soil with different degrees of oil pollution. Furthermore, the influences of the environmental factors including pH, moisture content, organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, oil, and the biological toxicity of the soil on the structures of bacterial communities were analyzed.

Inorganic aerogels have exhibited many superior characteristics with extensive applications, but are still plagued by a nearly century-old tradeoff between their mechanical and thermal properties. When reducing thermal conductivity by ultralow density, inorganic aerogels generally suffer from large fragility due to their brittle nature or weak joint crosslinking, while enhancing the mechanical robustness by material design and structural engineering, they easily sacrifice thermal insulation and stability. Here, we report a chemically bonded multi-nanolayer design and synthesis of a graphene/amorphous boron nitride aerogel to address this typical tradeoff to further enhance mechanical and thermal properties.

Enhanced sampling molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been extensively used in the phase transition study of simple crystalline materials, such as aluminum, silica, and ice. However, MD simulation of the crystallization process for complex crystalline materials still faces a formidable challenge due to their multicomponent induced multiphase problem. Here, we realize the accuracy MD crystallization simulations of complex ceramics by using anisotropic collective variables (CVs) and machine learning (ML) potential.

The enhanced biodegradation of oil-contaminated soil by fixing microorganisms with corn cob biochar was investigated. It was found that the components of oil in the test soil were mainly straight-chain alkanes and branched alkanes. When using corn cob biochar as a carrier to immobilize microorganisms, the best particle size of corn cob biochar as an immobilization carrier was 0.

A quasi-distributed acoustic sensor using in-line weak reflectors and a low coherence light source is presented. The dynamic strain is retrieved from the phase change of the two interfering light beams reflected by the same weak reflector. In the experiments, two vibrations at different channels along a weak reflector array are successfully detected simultaneously.

Thermal insulation under extreme conditions requires materials that can withstand complex thermomechanical stress and retain excellent thermal insulation properties at temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius. Ceramic aerogels are attractive thermal insulating materials; however, at very high temperatures, they often show considerably increased thermal conductivity and limited thermomechanical stability that can lead to catastrophic failure. Here we report a multiscale design of hypocrystalline zircon nanofibrous aerogels with a zig-zag architecture that leads to exceptional thermomechanical stability and ultralow thermal conductivity at high temperatures.
